Two new approaches to application quality have emerged: "risk-based testing" - pioneered in particular by Rex Black - and "exploratory testing" - as evangelized by James Bach and others. Neither claim to eradicate issues of application quality, which most likely will continue as long as software coding involves human beings. However, along with automation of the more routine tests, these techniques form the basis for higher quality application software.

Extending its efforts to bring more value to organizations using Hadoop technology, MarkLogic has updated its Connector for Hadoop to now allow Hadoop applications direct access to data indexed and managed by the MarkLogic Enterprise NoSQL database platform. Using the Connector, a Hadoop application can directly read all of the data from MarkLogic's compressed data files stored in the Hadoop Distributed File System, without communicating through a MarkLogic database or exporting the data.

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison made three key announcements in his opening keynote at Oracle OpenWorld, the company's annual conference for customers and partners in San Francisco. Ellison unveiled the Oracle Database In-Memory Option to Oracle Database 12c which he said speeds up query processing by "orders of magnitude," the M6 Big Memory Machine, and the new Oracle Database Backup Logging Recovery Appliance. Explaining Oracle's goals with the new in-memory option, Ellison noted that in the past there have been row-format databases, and column-format databases that are intended to speed up query processing. "We had a better idea. What if we store data in both formats simultaneously?"
