Oracle is offering a new, smaller version of the HP Oracle Database Machine, according to a post last week on the company's Data Warehouse Insider blog. This follows the initial introduction of the HP Oracle Database Machine, which was unveiled by CEO Larry Ellison at Oracle OpenWorld in September 2008. More than three years in development, Ellison called the offering "the world's fastest database machine."

Greenplum, a leading provider of database software for the next generation of data warehousing and analytics, has announced new technology designed to accelerate data loading for companies dealing with exponential data growth. Greenplum's new "MPP Scatter/Gather Streaming" (SG Streaming) technology eliminates the bottlenecks associated with other approaches to data loading, enabling high-speed flows of data into the Greenplum Database for large-scale analytics and data warehousing. According to Greenplum, some of its customers are achieving production loading speeds of over four terabytes per hour with negligible impact on concurrent database operations. The SG Streaming technology is available immediately and is a standard feature of the Greenplum Database.

Pervasive Software has introduced Pervasive DataMatcher, a highly accurate and high-performance data matching solution based on the Pervasive DataRush technology. DataRush is an embeddable software platform for data intensive processing applications, and is optimized for use on multi-core processors. At a joint press conference in New York last week, SAP AG and Sybase announced a partnership to deliver the new SAP Business Suite software to iPhone, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry and other devices by integrating it with Sybase's mobile enterprise application platform. Way back in 2003, Walmart announced that it would require Radio Frequency ID (RFID) tags—so-called "electronic barcodes"—to be attached to virtually all merchandise. Walmart pioneered the use of the printed bar code back in the 1970s, and many—myself included—became convinced that the company's directive would be the tipping point leading to universal adoption of RFID tabs in consumer goods and elsewhere.

Quest Software made a joint announcement with Microsoft at the recent VSLive! Conference in San Francisco, indicating that it will offer an Oracle Database Schema Provider for the upcoming release of Microsoft Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) 2010. Quest's new tool provides Oracle support for VSTS, enabling Oracle developers to fully participate with other VSTS team members throughout the entire application lifecycle. Previous to this, Oracle professionals could not benefit from the improvements in communication and workflow that VSTS offers. Oracle development in VSTS was limited, involved time-consuming manual processes, and did not support the system's new offline database development and design paradigm. With Quest's new tool, VSTS can now support both Oracle and SQL Server databases.

Informatica Corporation, a provider of data integration software, announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Applimation, a leader in application information lifecycle management (ILM). The acquisition is expected to close within days, according to Informatica, which will acquire all the capital stock of Applimation in a cash transaction valued at approximately $40 million.

Altosoft, a provider of process-aware business intelligence software solutions, has announced a partnership with Netezza Corporation, which develops and sells data warehouse and analytics appliances. As a result of the partnership, Altosoft's InsightBI business intelligence solution has been certified with the Netezza Performance Server (NPS) data warehouse appliances, and the two companies will collaborate on marketing and sales. Many Altosoft customers have already been running the company's software on Netezza appliances, and this partnership formalizes that combination by providing the market with a fully certified interoperable solution. While the two products are not physically bundled together and must still be purchased separately from the respective companies, their integration has been tested and proven and Altosoft is now a Certified Netezza Partner.
