SEPATON, Inc., which provides disk-based data protection solutions specifically designed for large enterprises, has released DeltaStorDBeXstream software, which is intended to enable the backup and restore of large databases at industry-leading rates while also delivering high capacity reduction through byte-differential deduplication. The software is part of the 6.1 release of its enterprise-optimized data protection software, which powers its S2100 systems.

Datameer has announced a new release of its big data analytics solution, which combines data integration, analytics and visualization of any data type in one application. The new capabilities offered in Datameer 2.0 are in two main categories, Joe Nicholson, vice president of marketing, Datameer, tells DBTA. One is adding new functionality and the other is bringing Hadoop to the desktop with Hadoop natively embedded in two of three new editions of the application.

Hyve Solutions, a division of SYNNEX Corporation has entered a software licensing agreement with IBM to offer IBM InfoSphere BigInsights software with its BigD family of systems hardware. The turnkey platform is intended to provide mid-market clients with an enterprise-class big data system to help them quickly deploy Hadoop-based analytics without the need for on-premise professional services or developers. To achieve enterprise-class standards in BigD systems, Hyve Solutions and IBM collaborated with Zettaset, Inc. to build in safeguards that provide service management, failover and restart, as well as alerting and monitoring features.

Sharon Shelton, vice president of marketing at Entrinsik, showcases Hawaii Human Resources (HiHR), a company using HRPyramid and Entrinsik Informer to help provide customized HR solutions to nearly 250 clients, in a new blog post this month on the Entrinsik website. Prior to purchasing Informer, HIHR was limited to the stock reports and unable to extract the specific data needed for internal and external reporting purposes, Shelton explains. But, since deploying Informer, HiHR has created almost 200 reports, including basic census, 401K reporting, and code file listings, and the company also makes heavy use of more advanced Informer functionality, such as Live Excel.

The new solution will provide Paciolan's clients with real-time dashboards, cross-systems reporting and direct data warehouse access to help them make data-driven business decisions.

Kalido, a provider of agile information management software and Gold level member in Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN), has achieved Oracle Exadata Optimized status, demonstrating that Kalido Information Engine 9.0 has been tested and tuned on Oracle Exadata Database Machine to deliver speed, scalability and reliability to customers. The new optimized status signifies that Kalido's application which is certified to run on Exadata has now been optimized, meaning that it is taking advantage of the features in Exadata, including the memory, and the tuning and performance capabilities, and that as a result, Kalido is able to give customers better performance of its application running on the Exadata stack, says Bill Hewitt, Kalido president and CEO.

The Oracle Platinum Services are available at no charge as part of a standard support contract to customers with either Oracle Exadata X2-2 and X2-8, Oracle Exalogic X2-2, and SPARC SuperCluster T4-4 Servers with Exadata storage, Sun ZFS Storage or Oracle's Pillar Axiom 600 Storage. To access Oracle Platinum Services, customers install a patented, secure monitoring gateway that will allow Oracle to deploy quarterly updates on their behalf. With the new services, Oracle is delivering what it thinks is the highest level of service in the industry, says Larry Abramson, senior vice president and general manager, Oracle Advanced Customer Support Services.

QlikTech, a business intelligence software provider, has acquired Expressor Software, a Burlington, Massachusetts-based data management software company and QlikTech Qonnect partner. "Expressor fits squarely in our acquisition strategy. We are acquiring complementary, tuck-in technology that will enhance the value we provide to our customers as we further develop and bring to market these solutions. We are also adding more than 20 outstanding people, primarily software engineers, expanding our R&D skill set," said Lars Björk, CEO of QlikTech.

Cloudera has unveiled the fourth generation of its flagship Apache Hadoop data management platform, Cloudera Enterprise. Cloudera Enterprise 4.0 combines the company's Cloudera Manager software with expert technical to provide a turnkey system for deploying and managing Hadoop in production. The company also announced the general availability of CDH4 (Cloudera's Distribution Including Apache Hadoop, version 4), resulting from the successful completion of a beta program among its enterprise customers and partner ecosystem and the contributions of Cloudera's engineering team and the greater Apache open source community.

Closely following its announcement of plans to acquire Vitrue, a cloud-based social marketing and engagement platform, Oracle says it has also entered into an agreement to acquire Collective Intellect, a provider of cloud-based social intelligence solutions. The Collective Intellect transaction is expected to close in the second half of the year; and the Vitrue acquisition, which was announced on May 23, is expected to close in the summer of 2012.

Offered as an integration platform-as-a-service (iPaaS), the latest release from Informatica features the Cloud Connector Toolkit, Cloud Integration Templates, and new enterprise features, all of which are part of the new Informatica Cloud Developer Edition and allow developers to rapidly embed end-user customizable integration logic and connectivity into cloud applications.

Despite IT industry talk about the need for real-time data, a new survey of more than 330 data managers and professionals who are subscribers to Database Trends and Applications reveals that access to current data to support decision making is not actually possible for many companies. At least half of companies represented in the survey indicate that relevant data still takes 24 hours or longer to reach decision makers.

Embarcadero Technologies has introduced a new version of its database management and development platform, DB Power Studio XE3, which offers enhancements to further improve the performance and availability of databases. Plans are underway for an event specifically focused on Sybase PowerBuilder and tools that will be separate from TechEd but held at the same time and location, according to Christine Weber, marketing manager, Events, at Sybase, an SAP company. There will also be close to 100 hours of sessions specifically focused on Sybase database and analytics products at SAP TechEd 2012, Weber tells 5 Minute Briefing. "It is a good portion and it is focused on the traditional kind of content that we have always done with Sybase." Sybase-specific content will include tips and tricks on how to use existing products, as well as previews of what's ahead in new product releases. Now that the call for papers has closed, Sybase is going through its approval process for the presentations. Well over 200 presentations were submitted - "a good problem to have," Weber notes.

Organizations are struggling with big data, which they define as any large-size data store that becomes unmanageable by standard technologies or methods, according to a new survey of 264 data managers and professionals who are subscribers to Database Trends and Applications. The survey was conducted by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, Inc., in partnership with MarkLogic in January 2012. Among the key findings uncovered by the survey is the fact that unstructured data is on the rise, and ready to engulf current data management systems. Added to that concern, say respondents, is their belief that management does not understand the challenge that is looming, and is failing to recognize the significance of unstructured data assets to the business.

IBM has announced plans to acquire Tealeaf Technology, Inc., a provider of customer experience analytics software that helps organizations react more quickly to consumer trends.
