Cisco has announced its intent to acquire Composite Software, a privately held company specializing in data virtualization software and services. Headquartered in San Mateo, Calif., Composite provides data virtualization software that enables a simplified and optimized logical view of data from multiple sources across the network, giving applications and business users the ability to access and query all types of data as if it is in a single place. According to Cisco, the acquisition of Composite will expand its Smart Services portfolio and extend its services platform by optimizing data and connecting to the infrastructure layer, enhancing programmability and use of APIs for Cisco customers.

Composite Software has released the Composite Data Virtualization Platform 6.2 SP3. This release really has four elements, Robert Eve, executive vice president of marketing, Composite, tells 5 Minute Briefing. It updates the Hortonworks, Cloudera and the Apache Distribution of Hadoop big data integrations through the HiveServer2 interface, and then fourth, provides new access to Cloudera CDH through Impala. HP and SAP AG are making progress on a joint initiative, code-named "Project Kraken," to improve business processes and mitigate risks for customers. Unveiled last January, Project Kraken is a co-innovation effort between HP and SAP, built from years of HP server technology innovations and optimized with the in-memory SAP HANA database for SAP Business Suite. The prototype system was demonstrated for the first time at SAPPHIRE NOW in Orlando, Fla.

OpenText, a provider of enterprise information management (EIM) software, announced the expansion of the OpenText ECM Suite for SAP Solutions in support of SAP's latest technologies, including the SAP HANA platform, and cloud and mobility solutions. Splunk Inc., which provides a software platform for real-time operational intelligence, and Hortonworks, a contributor to Apache Hadoop, have formed an alliance to enable organizations to gain operational intelligence using open source Apache Hadoop. The alliance enables organizations to use Splunk Enterprise and Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) through Splunk Hadoop Connect, which moves data between Splunk Enterprise and Hadoop.

Dell Software's latest release of SharePlex, a data replication solution, has added support for near real-time data integration to drive improved data warehousing, business intelligence and analytics. SharePlex, which has a heritage as an Oracle-to-Oracle data replication solution, now enables customers to replicate Oracle data using CDC to other databases, including structured databases such as SQL Server, DB2, Sybase, Netezza, and Teradata, as well as emerging unstructured databases such as Hadoop and Greenplum. SharePlex 8.0 also adds new support for Oracle Transparent Data Encryption and Hybrid Columnar Compression.

Data is not sedentary. Once data has been created, organizations tend to move it around to support many different purposes—different applications, different geographies, different users, different computing environments, and different DBMSs. Data is copied and transformed and cleansed and duplicated and stored many times throughout the organization. Different copies of the same data are used to support transaction processing and analysis; test, quality assurance, and operational systems; day-to-day operations and reporting; data warehouses, data marts, and data mining; and distributed databases. Controlling this vast sea of data falls on the DBA who uses many techniques and technologies to facilitate data movement and distribution.

Rocket U2 is now providing a single ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) driver for UniData and UniVerse that supports both 32-bit and 64-bit systems. The driver provides a standard interface for user applications, third-party reporting and BI tools to connect with data sources. Oklahoma City Housing Authority (OCHA) has selected Informer Dashboards from Entrinsik to help it quickly and easily create and share data visualizations. Informer Dashboards answers a pressing need for OCHA. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has various reporting guidelines for housing authorities that require a significant amount of data to ensure compliance. HUD is beginning to require dashboards as a way of presenting this data and OCHA had no easy way of quickly and easily developing the necessary visualizations.
