Progress Software announced availability of new data connectivity and application capabilities as part of its Progress Pacific application platform-as-a-service (aPaaS) for building and managing business applications on any cloud, mobile or social platform. "Pacific is a platform running in the cloud that is targeted at small and medium-size businesses, ISVs and departmental IT," John Goodson, chief product officer at Progress Software, explained in an interview. Instead of requiring a highly trained IT staff to build applications, Goodson says, the platform provides a visual design paradigm that allows users with limited skills to build powerful applications that can quickly connect to any data sources.

The Oracle Applications Users Group (OAUG) has formed a new special interest group (SIG) to allow users to share information and best practices regarding Oracle Endeca modules, including Oracle Endeca Commerce, Oracle Endeca Information Discovery and Oracle E-Business Suite Extensions for Oracle Endeca. GT Software is shipping a new release in its Ivory Suite of products, providing SQL access to CA IDMS, a mainframe database. Ivory Data Hub v5.2.0 is designed to simplify SQL access to mainframe data, simplify problem diagnosis, and extend its integration into IBM's Workload Manager (WLM). Pentaho Corporation, a provider of big data analytics and data integration software, has formed an alliance with Splunk Inc. to provide a big data analytics solution that enables business users to analyze machine data that is generated by websites, applications, servers, storage, network, mobile and other devices, including system sensors. As a result of the new alliance, Splunk customers will have the ability to use Pentaho's platform to do two things, said Eddie White, executive vice president, business development at Pentaho, in an interview.

Oracle is advancing the role of Java for IoT (Internet of Things) with the latest releases of its Oracle Java Embedded product portfolio - Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.3 and Oracle Java ME Software Development Kit (SDK) 3.3, a complete client Java runtime and toolkit optimized for microcontrollers and other resource-constrained devices. Oracle is also introducing the Oracle Java Platform Integrator program to provide partners with the ability to customize Oracle Java ME Embedded products to reach different device types and market segments. "We see IoT as the next big wave that will hit the industry," Oracle's Peter Utzschneider, vice president of product management, explained during a recent interview.

More "things" are now connected to the internet than people, a phenomenon dubbed The Internet of Things. Fueled by machine-to-machine (M2M) data, the Internet of Things promises to make our lives easier and better, from more efficient energy delivery and consumption to mobile health innovations where doctors can monitor patients from afar. However, the resulting tidal wave of machine-generated data streaming in from smart devices, sensors, monitors, meters, etc., is testing the capabilities of traditional database technologies. They simply can't keep up; or when they're challenged to scale, are cost-prohibitive.

Our conversation was wide ranging and covered a lot of topics, such as internal features and upcoming announcements. (I'm under at least three different NDA's. So don't expect me to give up anything too juicy or gossipy.) For example, we spent quite a while discussing the ton of great new features and improvements just over the horizon with the recent release of SQL Server 2014 CTP1.

Attunity Ltd., a provider of information availability software solutions, has signed an OEM reseller agreement with Infor, an ERP solutions provider. Oracle has announced the latest 12c releases of its Cloud Application Foundation, which integrates application server and in-memory data grid capabilities into a foundation for cloud computing, representing "a major release of our middleware infrastructure," Mike Lehmann, Oracle vice president of product management, tells 5 Minute Briefing. SAP AG and Esri, a geographic information system (GIS) and location analytics provider, are joining forces to more deeply integrate GIS solutions with platforms and enterprise applications from SAP in order to improve business efficiency and decision-making. The ability to combine the added dimension of location information with enterprise data, in real time is aimed at giving businesses greater immediacy in their decision-making capabilities. "We are partnering with the leading GIS vendor in the marketplace, Esri, to provide much deeper integration. SAP AG announced this week that version 16 of the company's Sybase software has achieved a Guinness World Record for loading and indexing big data. In cooperation with BMMsoft, HP and Red Hat, SAP Sybase IQ 16 achieved an audited result of 34.3 terabytes per hour, surpassing the previous record of 14 terabytes per hour achieved by the same team using an earlier version of SAP Sybase IQ. The latest version of th real-time analytics server and enterprise data warehouse (EDW) provides a new, fully parallel data loading capability and a next-generation column store, enabling the jump in big data performance.

SAP plans to acquire hybris, an e-commerce software company. SAP says the combination of its own enterprise solutions combined with e-commerce solutions from hybris will provide enterprises with the enhanced data and tools necessary to optimize margins and customer loyalty. Upon completion of the transaction, expected in the third quarter of 2013 and subject to regulatory approval and other closing conditions, SAP says hybris will operate as an independent business unit and will retain its existing management team led by Ariel Ludi, CEO, and Carsten Thoma, president and co-founder, of hybris.

Composite Software has released the Composite Data Virtualization Platform 6.2 SP3. This release really has four elements, Robert Eve, executive vice president of marketing, Composite, tells 5 Minute Briefing. It updates the Hortonworks, Cloudera and the Apache Distribution of Hadoop big data integrations through the HiveServer2 interface, and then fourth, provides new access to Cloudera CDH through Impala. "The key problem with big data is that there are not enough people that are skilled at the big data tools to use them effectively," Eve notes.

Cisco has announced its intent to acquire Composite Software, a privately held company specializing in data virtualization software and services. Headquartered in San Mateo, Calif., Composite provides data virtualization software that enables a simplified and optimized logical view of data from multiple sources across the network, giving applications and business users the ability to access and query all types of data as if it is in a single place. According to Cisco, the acquisition of Composite will expand its Smart Services portfolio and extend its services platform by optimizing data and connecting to the infrastructure layer, enhancing programmability and use of APIs for Cisco customers.
