With the increasing volume, variety, and velocity of big data flowing into enterprises, they no longer have the ability to govern and synchronize all of their information. As a result, new processes must be put in place to quickly explore and assess data for value, says Joe Caserta, CEO and founder of Caserta Concepts. Caserta will present a keynote as well as a workshop at Data Summit 2017.

Today's enterprise database environments are growing in size and complexity, fueled by rising data volumes and new business demands. Many databases that have been at the heart of existing enterprises to power mission-critical applications are now being positioned to support new Digital Native businesses. As a result, 24x7 high availability is no longer a luxury for select applications; it's a necessity for the bulk of the business—many organizations can no longer afford downtime in their data environments—even for a minute.

Over the last decade, VMware virtualization has become a preferred platform for hundreds of thousands of customers, many of them running their business-critical applications on the virtualized infrastructure. At the center of many of these BCA environments is the Oracle Database Management System. However, there is still a significant amount of confusion regarding how to properly license Oracle software in those VMware environments.

To meet the new demands of managing infrastructure in the cloud in a proactive manner, the new role of the "cloud keeper" has emerged. The cloud keeper is part technologist, part accountant, and part administrator. The cloud keeper has financial responsibility for keeping control of infrastructure expenses to prevent financial chaos. The role is part technical, since it requires an understanding of how and where resources are deployed. The cloud keeper must know how a resource is paid for and have enough technical expertise to know which resources can be spun up or down or would be better suited for one cloud paradigm over another.

As the Internet of Things (IoT) revolution works its way through marketing hype and seeks its place of valuable contribution within companies and industries, you might pause to wonder how IoT can create opportunities for your company. Yet that assessment is difficult in part because the buzz does not always align with reality. In short, it's no simple task to discern the true potential of IoT today, leaving one to wonder: What is realistic, what difference could IoT make in my company, and how mature are other companies in embracing IoT potential?

The concept of data lakes is a great one, but if not done correctly, this treasure trove of information can quickly turn into a black abyss for data analysts and scientists, let alone business users.

Make no mistake: Big data is promising, exciting, and effective—when done right. Once considered an overhyped buzzword, it's now a potential tool that leaders in every vertical want to harness. Unfortunately, the majority of new big data projects—about 55% of them, according to Gartner—are shuttered before they even get off the ground.

There has been plenty of dialogue within the IT community about when to migrate to the cloud, how to migrate to the cloud, which provider offers customers the best cloud environments, and the due diligence or governance that is necessary before taking that big step. There are larger waves of change nipping at our heels, yet we seem content to continue discussing a technology that is a means to an end.

There's a wide and growing acceptance that containers are replacing operating systems as the deployment target for application components. While application modules were previously designed to be installed upon a specific version of an operating system on a particular hardware platform, they are now increasingly being designed to run within a virtualized representation of an operating system—most frequently within a Docker container.

It is difficult to find someone not talking about or considering using containers to deploy and manage their enterprise applications. A container just looks like another process running on a system; a dedicated CPU and pre-allocated memory aren't required in order to run a container. The simplicity of building, deploying, and managing containers is among the reasons that containers are growing rapidly in popularity.

It all used to be so simple. There were relational databases and they were all on-premises. But today it is an increasingly hybrid world, with virtualization and Hadoop arguably the source of the most dramatic technology shifts of the past 10 years. At Data Summit 2017, Unisphere Research lead analyst and DBTA contributor Joe McKendrick will moderate tracks on these two critical technology trends during Hadoop Day on Tuesday, May 16, and Virtualization Day on Wednesday, May 17.

Are enterprises more or less secure than 5 years ago? That's the big question of the moment, especially with ongoing revelations about state-sponsored hacking, as well as an unending stream of reports about customer and employee data being compromised by even the most seemingly security-conscious organizations. Awareness of data security is running at a fever pitch at the highest levels of government and business organizations. There have been plenty of technology advances, and awareness has grown. Still, the wave of breaches and threats never seems to abate, and likely never will.

No one solution can be all things to all enterprises, and as enterprises began to deploy vSAN across their environments, they noticed a big thing was missing. Despite its many benefits, vSAN lacks support for a file system. The importance of having a file system within a data center cannot be overstated. Without a file system, the guest VMs (virtual machines) cannot share files between them and are forced to use an external NAS (network attached storage) solution as shared storage. Without a file system overlaying this data, it becomes laborious and impossible to scale efficiently.
