"This acquisition is strategic, synergistic, and will strengthen our leadership in the big data and Hadoop market," said Shimon Alon, Attunity's chairman and CEO, during a conference call this morning discussing his company's purchase of Appfluent, a provider of data usage analytics for big data environments, including data warehousing and Hadoop. "We also expect it to accelerate our revenue growth and to be accretive to earnings." The total purchase price is approximately $18 million, payable in cash and stock, with additional earn-out consideration based on performance milestones.

Addressing the increased demand for the cloud approach, Trillium Software, a Harte Hanks company and global provider of enterprise data quality solutions, has announced Trillium Cloud, a new service platform that provides organizations with an enterprise data quality solution, consumable via a managed public cloud environment. 2015 is going to be a big year for big data in the enterprise, according to Oracle. Neil Mendelson, Oracle vice president of big data and advanced analytics, shared Oracle's "Top 7" big data predictions for 2015. "The technology is moving very quickly and it is gaining to the point where a broader set of people can get into it - not just because it is affordable - but because they no longer require specialized skills in order to take advantage of it," he said.

Embarcadero Technologies, a provider of software solutions for application and database development, has introduced CONNECT, the company's new metadata governance platform. "There is a growing recognition that data governance is the pragmatic approach to the complexities of the enterprise data landscape," Henry Olson, director of product management, Embarcadero, explained in a recent interview. The two key ideas for CONNECT center around what Embarcadero calls "embracing the sprawl," said Olson.

New additions to IBM's Flex System portfolio have been added, including new virtualization, networking and management tools. The offerings consist of three systems built on both IBM POWER7+ and a "double dense" x222 system built on x86 technology. IBM also said it has upgraded the Flex System Manager to enable users to monitor and manage up to 5,000 infrastructure end points and do so from any location using iOS, Android and Blackberry mobile devices.

Symantec has released Data Insight 4.0, the latest version of its unstructured data governance solution, which provides insight into the ownership and usage of unstructured data, such as documents, presentations, spreadsheets and emails. "Many organizations are in the dark as to what data they have, what information they have, who owns that data, and the relevance of that data to the business. The unstructured data environment is pretty much like a black hole with limited or no visibility," Ketan Shah, product manager, Symantec Storage & Availability Management Group, told 5 Minute Briefing during a recent interview.
