Microsoft and Linux software provider Red Hat have announced a partnership to provide Red Hat solutions on the Microsoft Azure cloud service. Microsoft is offering Red Hat Enterprise Linux as the preferred choice for enterprise Linux workloads on Microsoft Azure. In addition, Microsoft and Red Hat are also working together to address common enterprise, ISV and developer needs for building, deploying and managing applications on Red Hat software across private and public clouds.

Oracle has announced that the new Oracle Exadata Database Machine X5-8, the latest in the X5 family of engineered systems which integrate hardware and software, is now available. The new Exadata X5-8 offers up to 576 CPU cores, more than 1.3 petabytes of disk storage or 180 terabytes of PCIe flash, and up to 24 terabytes of memory. The Oracle Exadata X5-8 is the new companion model to Oracle Exadata X5-2 and incorporates the same storage and networking capabilities of Oracle Exadata X5-2, which was announced in January 2015.

Organizations are getting squeezed, said Mark Hurd, Oracle CEO, in his Monday morning keynote at Oracle OpenWorld 2015. They have old infrastructure; there is the need for innovation but also great pressure to do things such as increase security and adhere to governance mandates which are not innovative; and also pressure to keep costs flat, without increasing IT costs. "This is why the cloud is such a big deal," said Hurd, sharing his list of top 5 predictions for 2025.

To kick off Oracle Open World 2015, Oracle's annual user conference at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CTO and executive chairman Larry Ellison detailed the steps that led Oracle be positioned in "every layer of the cloud." Ellison outlined the top design goals for the company in all three layers of the cloud - SaaS, PaaS and IaaS. These are cost, reliability, performance, standards, compatibility - as well as security, which he said is increasingly becoming a more critical concern.

Alteryx Inc., which specializes in blending and advanced analytics, is receiving $85 million from an investment round led by firms Iconiq Capital and Insight Venture Partners, along with Meritech Capital Partners. "Tools like Alteryx are really democratizing the way people work particularly when it comes to doing predicative statistical capabilities and be able to complement that with the data prep blending that is naturally happening in Alteryx today," said George Mathew, president and COO of Alteryx. MongoDB is releasing an enhanced version of its platform, giving the company the opportunity to expand its capabilities to more users. "We're opening up MongoDB to a bigger audience in the enterprise, which is to say that traditionally the people that have used MongoDB were developers building modern applications and, with this release, we are building specific tools and capabilities targeted at data scientists, business analysts, and the C suite in terms of integration to business intelligence and visualization tools," said Kelly Stirman, vice president of strategy and product marketing at MongoDB. "We're also expanding MongoDB to DBAs and operations teams with specialized interfaces that make it easier to run MongoDB at any scale."

Following its separation from Hewlett-Packard Company, Hewlett Packard Enterprise made its debut today as an enterprise technology provider with $53 billion in annual revenue and a comprehensive product portfolio. HP announced plans to separate into two new publicly traded companies a year ago with one including HP's enterprise technology infrastructure, software and services businesses, doing business as Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, and the other comprising HP's personal systems and printing businesses, operating as HP Inc. and retain the current logo.

At Oracle OpenWorld today Oracle announced a suite of integrated monitoring, management and analytics solutions for IT organizations. "There is unprecedented pressure to deliver features, functionality, and updates much faster than they have ever been done before," said Prakash Ramamurthy, Oracle senior vice president, Systems & Cloud Management, in an interview. But, at the same time there is less patience than ever for slow-performing applications. As a result, there is a greater need to reduce critical errors and reduce the time to troubleshoot problems when they occur.

IBM said it had a tough third-quarter, with net income of $3.0 billion, down from $3.5 billion during the same period a year ago, a decrease of 14%. Total revenues for the third quarter were $19.3 billion, down 14% from the third quarter of 2014.

The latest IBM quarterly results (for Q3 2015), show that the mainframe continues to be a leading revenue producer for Big Blue. The reasons for this are evident, according to a new survey of mainframe sites conducted by our friends at BMC, which shows that security, availability, a superior data server, and transactional throughput are the primary drivers for the continued increase in mainframe capacity, which is especially timely as the digital economy increasingly runs on transactions.

MapR is including Apache Drill 1.2 in its Apache Hadoop distribution and is also now offering a new Data Exploration Quick Start Solution, leveraging Drill to help customers get started more rapidly with big data projects. Apache Drill is an open source, low-latency query engine for Hadoop that delivers secure, interactive SQL analytics at petabyte scale. With the two announcements, MapR says customers and partners will able to more quickly leverage Drill to get fast business insights from all their data in Hadoop and other sources. MapR also released a comprehensive SQL-based test framework to the open source community.
