Database Management

Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMSs) continue to do the heavy lifting in data management, while newer database management systems are taking on prominent roles as well. NoSQL database systems such as Key-Value, Column Family, Graph, and Document databases, are gaining acceptance due to their ability to handle unstructured and semi-structured data. MultiValue, sometimes called the fifth NoSQL database, is also a well-established database management technology which continues to evolve to address new enterprise requirements.

VoltDB, provider of an enterprise-class translytical database for business-critical applications, has announced the latest version of its flagship solution. While organizations have plenty of real-time data, they continue to struggle with taking immediate action on that data before opportunities are lost, said Ruth Morgenstein, VP of Engineering at VoltDB. VoltDB helps organizations to ingest and analyze high transactional throughput with low latency to make immediate and accurate decisions that positively impact their business, she noted.

It's no secret that data management has changed dramatically in the nearly 10 years since the onslaught of "big data." A decade ago, the relational database management system (RDBMS) ruled the enterprise.  Today, polyglot persistence is the mandate, and innovative NoSQL and NewSQL databases, cloud services, and data processing technologies have arisen alongside stalwart RDBMSs, data warehouses, and traditional on-premise deployments. However, despite the increasingly challenging data environment, experts agree, opportunities for DBAs abound—provided they are willing to continue learning and growing and to step in to fill gaps where they open up.

Oracle has announced the Oracle Database Security Assessment Tool (DBSAT) to help organizations assess the security configuration of their databases, identify sensitive data, and evaluate database users for risk exposure.

Are machines better equipped to do what DBAs do? There was an interesting post recently that stated 800 million jobs worldwide were at risk due to automation by 2030. The impact will not be equally distributed between job functions. In addition, different job functions will see different percentages of jobs automated.

As the president of the Independent Oracle Users Group I often get asked for advice about which Oracle event to attend—COLLABORATE or Oracle OpenWorld. Sometimes it's just, "What is COLLABORATE?" or even, "Isn't COLLABORATE just a mini Oracle OpenWorld?" These two events are very different, and, depending on your role, one may be better for you than the other.

"Citizen developers"—those business users outside of the IT department who design or build their own applications—are more than a small band of rebels. A majority of organizations now rely on non-IT developers for at least some of their mission-critical applications. Few companies discourage such activity, and many are benefiting from the faster pace of software releases with which citizen developers play a part.

The term "big data" has been bandied about for a number of years now, to the point where it has been used so much that it is a part of IT culture. Hard to specifically define, yet everyone seems to have a good idea what is meant by it, big data is here to stay. And that is a good thing!

Far too often, business users seem consumed by the systems they handle. This makes them unable to define the necessary business processes or needs of the organization. All these users can do is describe what their off-the-shelf packages provide for them. In fact, most users take great pride in their "understanding" of the current system.

A new study conducted by Unisphere Research and sponsored by Quest Software examines the challenges being faced by database administrators (DBAs) and other data professionals who have long been the key guardians of companies' critical data assets. DBAs' primary responsibilities have been aimed at ensuring that data is safely, securely, accurately, and appropriately stored, managed, and maintained. However, over the last 10 years, major trends in technology have shaped—and reshaped—the ongoing role of the DBA in many organizations, according to the study, "DBAs Face New Challenges: Trends in Database Administration."

Security is nothing new to the DBA. Granting privileges, creating roles and auditing logons have been part of the DBA task list since the beginning, writes Michelle Malcher, security architect at Extreme Scale Solutions.  However, the security role is changing and the protection of the data is more than just creating users and managing permissions. Data security is a growing concern in all enterprises, and since the DBAs have been guardians of the data, their skillset can be utilized in moving forward to combat the new risks and threats. This article on the DBA's role in data security is the latest installment of a six-part series by the editors of IOUG SELECT and Big Data Quarterly.

The CTO of a major database vendor recently stated at a conference that basically DBAs would soon be out of a job. The gist of the keynote was autopilot flies better than humans, autonomous cars will be safer, so why would we not do the same for our databases (remove the human error)? What is the validity of this line of thought, and how might it be implemented? What does an autonomous database look like?
