SOA Software, a provider of unified governance automation products, announced today a centralized policy definition and service monitoring solution for IBM DataPower appliances. The tool, Service Manager for IBM WebSphere DataPower, enables customers to use their existing DataPower deployments to virtualize enterprise services for high-availability, load balancing, and offloading of costly XML and security processing.

iTKO, a provider of testing and validation solutions for SOA-enabled distributed enterprise applications, has introduced a new release of its flagship LISA product suite, which includes enhanced virtualization support. The new features in version 4.6 of LISA are targeted at helping customers who are experiencing greater pressure to deliver software faster, and with fewer resources and lower costs while also maintaining quality levels, the vendor says.

Citrix Systems, an application delivery infrastructure vendor, unveiled a set of improvements to its application delivery product line, Citrix XenApp, designed to simplify the process of delivering Windows applications as an on-demand service. The enhancements boost XenApp's capabilities in capacity planning, server provisioning and application management, the vendor says.

FactFinder 2.0 extends the reach of intelligent application discovery and service-level capabilities for application support to Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments, enabling users to understand the structure and relationship of their applications to efficiently manage complex, integrated applications, identify performance issues, and perform triage to resolve issues. Initial FactFinder support was for applications running on the Microsoft Windows platforms.

Cisco today unveiled a new data center architecture, services and a partner ecosystem targeted at the development of "next-generation data centers" that leverage virtualization and greater integration. Cisco's "Unified Computing System" is an architecture designed to bridge data center silos into a common architecture employing compute, network, storage access, and virtualization resources in a single system.

Vertica Systems has announced a new version of its Vertica Analytic Database packaged as a virtualized appliance to run in VMware environments. The new Vertica Virtualized Analytic Database is a simple-to-deploy, self-contained software package that runs its own Linux operating system and copy of Vertica, on any VMware-supported hardware as if it were a physical computer.

CommVault announced availability of Simpana 8, a new release of its enterprise data management software, which includes advances in recovery management, data reduction, virtual server protection, and content organization. The company's largest software release to date, Simpana 8 is the result of 18 months of development and includes more than 300 enhancements and 140 newly added product features, CommVault said.

Symantec Corp. plans to announce today Symantec Endpoint Virtualization Suite, intended to improve end-user productivity and lower the cost of managing endpoint devices. The suite enables customers to provision anything from traditional endpoints to full virtual endpoint workspaces based on standards independent of hypervisors, operating systems, and hardware platforms. The solution provides support across traditional endpoint and emerging end-user computing environments such as server-based computing, virtual hosted desktops and client-side hypervisors.

While the power of virtualization is enticing, its management implications are daunting. VMware says that the product, View Open Client, enables IT organizations to host user desktops in the data center, while letting users access their personalized desktop environments from almost any device, at any time.

Citrix Systems, a provider of enterprise desktop infrastructure solutions, announced today that it will develop application and desktop delivery solutions optimized for Intel Core 2 desktops and Centrino 2 laptops with Intel vPro technology. Under an agreement with Intel Corporation, Citrix plans to produce a new class of virtualization solutions that optimize the delivery of applications and desktops to millions of Intel Core2 and Centrino 2 processor-based devices, intended to reduce the cost of desktop management.

Enterprise IT departments deal with a conflicting set of priorities and constraints in data centers. The number of IT systems identified as critical to core business processes continues to increase as enterprises seek higher levels of operational efficiency and business growth, and because of increasing awareness about the costs of downtime. IT departments are being required to ensure the continuous operation of a growing number of these critical IT systems.
