IBM plans to provide "quantum-safe" cryptography services on the IBM public cloud in 2020. Additionally, IBM cryptographers have prototyped what the company calls the "world's first quantum computing-safe enterprise-class tape." At the current rate of progress in quantum computing, IBM says, it is expected that data protected by the asymmetric encryption methods used today may become insecure within the next 10-30 years. Acknowledging that this is a significant time away, IBM however cautions that data can be harvested today, stored, and decrypted in the future with a powerful enough quantum computer.

Toshiba Memory America, the U.S.-based subsidiary of Toshiba Memory Corp., has announced the launch of a new Storage Class Memory (SCM) solution, XL-FLASH. Based on the company's BiCS FLASH 3D flash memory technology with 1-bit-per-cell SLC, Toshiba says the XL-FLASH offers low latency and high performance for data center and enterprise storage. Sample shipments will start in September, with mass production expected to begin in 2020.

Dell EMC has announced DLm release 5.1 for synchronous tape replication between data centers, and Universal Data Consistency between tape and disk using the all-flash, PowerMax 8000. Additionally, Dell EMC is enhancing the long-term retention of tape using cloud-based physical tape replacement powered by Dell EMC Cloud Object Storage (ECS) to address the needs of organizations that want to stretch their tape to cover newer requirements, commit data to the cloud, or simply discontinue using physical tape.

An effective approach to processing and transforming large datasets is likely comprised of multiple steps. The large data will likely be split apart into several smaller sets, maybe even in a couple of differing fashions with a common and understandable theme. But there should not be too many split-apart variants; rather, as with the three bears, it should be just the right number of smaller datasets.
