Vendors like to say disk is cheap because it helps them sell more of it and to encourage bigger deployments. The fact is that data storage is getting cheaper all the time. When I entered the business, one GB of storage cost about $1000. Today, it's more like 10 cents—10,000 times less!

News agency Jiji reported that SoftBank is looking to invest $40-60 billion yen ($266-400 million) in developing "one of Japan's largest data centers" in Tomakomai City, Hokkaido. Details are sparse, but the company is reportedly looking to launch the facility in 2026. SoftBank is said to be targeting a new facility in the northern island of Hokkaido to address concerns around energy consumption amid the growing demands of generative AI.
