By the mid-2000s, a huge number of web apps were built upon the so-called LAMP stack. Organizations have directed a lot of attention recently to consolidation, automation, and cloud efforts in their data management environments. This will purportedly result in decreased demand for data managers and the need for fewer DBAs per groups of databases. However, the opposite seems to be occurring. In actuality, there is a growing need for more talent, as well as expertise to manage through growing complexity. A new survey, sponsored by Idera and conducted by Unisphere Research among more than 300 data executives, managers, and professionals finds that a more challenging data environment is arising due to a confluence of factors.

Oracle has rolled out new additions to the SPARC platform. Built on the new SPARC S7 microprocessor, the latest additions to the SPARC platform include new cloud services, engineered systems, and servers. IBM has introduced an update to its DB2 database software. IBM says the new release, IBM DB2 V11.1, will help developers more easily bridge on-premises applications to the cloud and enable a hybrid data architecture. IBM DB2 is also SQL-compatible with Oracle Database, making it possible to leverage existing skills to move applications from Oracle to DB2, according to IBM.

Red Hat, an open source solutions vendor, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire 3scale, a provider of application programming interface (API) management technology. By adding 3scale to its existing portfolio, including Red Hat JBoss Middleware, Red Hat OpenShift, and Red Hat Mobile Application Platform, Red Hat seeks to target the API economy with cloud integration and microservices-based architectures. The transaction is expected to close in June 2016, subject to customary closing conditions.

With Joyent's cloud technology, Samsung will now have access to its own cloud platform capable of supporting its growing lineup of mobile, Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud-based software and services. Cisco has unveiled Cisco Tetration Analytics, which is designed to help customers gain wider visibility across all aspects of their data center in real time. The data center analytics platform gathers telemetry from hardware and software sensors, and then analyzes the information using advanced machine learning techniques to address critical data center operations such as policy compliance, application forensics, and the move to a whitelist security model. "Think of it as a time machine for your data center," said Yogesh Kaushik, senior director of product management, Tetration, Cisco.

Splice Machine has announced that it is releasing its database management system, a dual-engine RDBMS powered by Hadoop and Spark, as an open source platform. The community edition will be free for members of the open source community, allowing them to use as well as modify source code, whereas the enterprise edition will include a set of proprietary tools focused on operational features that enable DBAs and DevOps teams to maintain, tune, and keep the platform secure while it's live.
