At Lotusphere 2010, the premier event for the enterprise collaboration community, held recently in Orlando, IBM announced a major expansion of IBM Lotus collaboration software and delivery of enterprise secure mail for Android, the iPhone and Nokia Symbian smartphones. "We believe IBM has taken a leadership position in providing the broadest mail and collaboration support for mobile devices," said Kevin Cavanaugh, vice president, messaging and collaboration, IBM.

If it weren't already clear that Linux is taking on a major role in the enterprise, consider the fact that the majority of contributions to the Linux kernel are coming from developers paid for their work. Seventy-five percent of code contributions to the Linux kernel between December 24, 2008 and January 10, 2010, came from people paid to do it by a range of companies including Red Hat, Novell and IBM, Jonathan Corbet, editor of LWN.net and lead author of the book "Linux Device Drivers," tells LinuxLine.

IBM has unveiled new software that helps customers accelerate and automate their migration projects. Based on hundreds of migrations from competitive systems to IBM, IBM developers have created new software tools that automate many of the manual processes to help accelerate Sun migrations. This software automatically discovers and identifies the Sun assets, provisions the new target IBM environment, and streamlines workload transitions—optimized across hardware, software and processes. The software can speed migrations from Sun Solaris to Linux or AIX, IBM's UNIX operating system, as well as applications and middleware to IBM systems. This workload-centric methodology has shortened the provisioning step from weeks to days for some clients.

Sybase today announced the availability of Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) 15.5, the newest version of its high-performance, mission-critical enterprise database management system. This latest version of ASE nonetheless provides key new functionality, Terry Orsborn, product marketing manager for Sybase ASE, tells 5 Minute Briefing. "The first is really around what we are calling ‘extreme performance.' This is our new in-memory database capability. Our customers are finding our approach to be very compelling and it is really resonating with their needs for low-latency and high concurrency."

Oracle has received regulatory approval from the European Commission for its acquisition of Sun Microsystems, Inc. Oracle said it expects unconditional approval from China and Russia and intends to close the transaction shortly. In a statement released by the commission, Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said, "I am now satisfied that competition and innovation will be preserved on all the markets concerned. Oracle's acquisition of Sun has the potential to revitalize important assets and create new and innovative products."

HP and Microsoft Corp. announced a three-year agreement to invest $250 million in efforts and product offerings intended to simplify technology environments. The companies plan to deliver new solutions that will be built on a next-generation infrastructure-to-application model; advance cloud computing by speeding application implementation; and encouraging greater IT automation. Terracotta, a provider of Java application management tools, announced it is shipping a clustered enterprise edition of its Quartz job scheduler, as part of its Terracotta 3.2 platform release. The latest release of Quartz, called Quartz EX, is an enterprise edition of Quartz, an open source Java job scheduler acquired by Terracotta in November.

Novell announced the release of an integrated file storage solution that provisions, moves, optimizes and reports on file storage based on user roles and customized business policies. The solution, Novell File Management Suite, enables organizations, regardless of operating system or existing storage management solution, to intelligently manage file storage at its source, tying the file to the user for the entire data lifecycle, the vendor says. This helps address storage costs as well as data compliance requirements.

IBM reported a decrease in annual revenues between 2008 and 2009, but revenues for the most recent quarter held steady. Overall, the company reports, revenues for 2009 totaled $95.8 billion, a decrease of 8% (5%, adjusting for currency), compared with $103.6 billion in 2008.
