Sybase 365, a subsidiary of Sybase, Inc., has announced that it has processed more than one trillion inter-operator messages since the company launched the first SMS interoperability messaging hub in 2001. One trillion messages is equivalent to processing approximately 32,000 messages per second for every second of one year.

Phoenix Software International has announced the release of its z/OS JES2 and JES3 interactive spool browse and system management product, supporting a Java Application Programming Interface (API). Version 4, Release 8.0, of (E)JES introduces the (E)JES Java Application Programming Interface (API), which complements the existing APIs for REXX and for procedural languages such as Assembler and C.

At the recent VMworld 2010 conference, Zmanda, a provider of open source based backup solutions and a VMware Technology Alliance Partner, said it has begun shipping enhancements to its VMware Backup Client for Amanda Enterprise (AE). In addition to running a full image-level backup of a live virtual machine (VM), users now have the ability to run faster and more efficient block-level differential backups of VMs. During recovery, the Zmanda's VMware backup client will automatically combine a full backup image with the relevant differential backup image.

BMC Software announced BMC Control-M 7, a new version of its solution for automating the management of dynamic and static workloads across applications as well as physical, virtual and cloud platforms. BMC Control-M 7 now includes Dynamic Workload Management, a capability that automatically maps workloads to IT priorities using policies that react to real-time business needs. This new feature enables enterprises to ensure workloads are aligned with business operational cycles, maximizing IT resources and reducing costs.

IBM today announced its intention to acquire Netezza, a publicly held company based in Marlborough, Mass., in a cash transaction at a price of $27 per share or at a net price of approximately $1.7 billion, after adjusting for cash. Business analytics is one of the fastest growing segments in the IT industry, observed Arvind Krishna, general manager of IBM's Software Group's Information Management business, during an IBM press teleconference to discuss the significance of the planned acquisition. By bringing the simplicity, ease of deployment, and speed of Netezza to IBM, the acquisition will help IBM accelerate its initiatives "to bring analytics to the masses," added Jim Baum, president and CEO of Netezza. The transaction, which is subject to Netezza shareholder approval, regulatory clearances and other customary closing conditions, is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Symantec Corp. announced the availability of Symantec Enterprise Vault 9.0 and Enterprise Vault Discovery Collector, technology to help organizations store, manage and discover information across the enterprise. The vendor also announced NetBackup 5000 deduplication appliance and cloud storage for NetBackup and Backup Exec to help organizations reduce their data storage footprints and more effectively leverage cloud-based data storage services.

CA Technologies has expanded its support for Amazon Web services (AWS), bundling a number of key products into a service offering to help manage and monitor cloud implementations through Amazon. The CA products now supporting Amazon include CA Virtual, CA Service Automation, CA Service Assurance and Nimsoft Monitoring Solution, which can now be plugged into the AWS Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC).

Fewer than 30% of the 430 respondents to a new survey conducted by the Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG) say their organizations are encrypting personally identifiable information in all their databases. Although that percentage is up slightly from last year, the finding is surprising given the number of existing data privacy and protection mandates that specifically call for data-at-rest encryption.

However, for most enterprises, security, geography and risk mitigation concerns make private cloud platforms more desirable. Enterprise customers like the idea of on-demand provisioning, but are often unwilling to take the performance, security and risk drawbacks of moving applications to remote hardware that is not under their direct control.

Database systems require data files to store the data under management. These files, or data sets, reside on storage media. So storage management should be a key part of the database operations required of a database administrator (DBA). Unfortunately, storage is sometimes relegated to an afterthought; after all, don't we have storage administrators who deal with our disk arrays? But this way of thinking is misguided. To succeed, database administration and storage administration need to cooperate and work together.

However, a recent survey of 279 Oracle applications managers reveals that when it comes to decision making, simple spreadsheets still remain the tool of choice. And business users still wait days, weeks, and months for their IT departments to deliver reports, despite significant investments in performance management systems.

Oracle yesterday announced that Mark V. Hurd has joined Oracle as president and has been named to Oracle's board of directors. Hurd will report to Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. "Mark did a brilliant job at HP and I expect he'll do even better at Oracle," said Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, in a statement commenting on Hurd's hire. "There is no executive in the IT world with more relevant experience than Mark. Oracle's future is engineering complete and integrated hardware and software systems for the enterprise. Mark pioneered the integration of hardware with software when Teradata was a part of NCR."

Quest Software, Inc. announced today that it has added Apache Cassandra, an open source NoSQL database, to its list of supported NoSQL platforms with the second beta release of Toad for Cloud Databases. Toad now supports data access and management for Apache Cassandra, Amazon SimpleDB, Microsoft Azure Table Services, Apache HBase, and any open database connectivity-enabled relational database.

Unisys has announced that, together with Unisystems SA, its business partner in Greece since 1964, it has won a contract from Alpha Bank for purchase of two new Unisys ClearPath Dorado 790 Series mainframe servers and renewal of a software licensing agreement to upgrade Alpha Bank's existing systems. These actions are part of Alpha Bank's initiative to modernize and expand its core banking system. Alpha Bank is one of Greece's leading banking and financial services groups, with nearly 500 branches in Greece.
