IBM Security has released its annual X-Force Threat Intelligence Index unveiling how ransomware and vulnerability exploitations together were able to hurt businesses in 2021, further burdening global supply chains, with manufacturing emerging as the most targeted industry.IBM Security X-Force said that while phishing was the most common cause of cyberattacks in general in the past year, it observed a 33% increase in attacks caused by vulnerability exploitation of unpatched software.

Software intelligence company Dynatrace has extended the Dynatrace platform's observability and advanced AIOps capabilities to all major serverless architectures. In addition to existing support for AWS Lambda, this includes Microsoft Azure Functions, Google Cloud Functions, as well as managed Kubernetes environments, messaging queues, and cloud databases across all major cloud providers. Separately, the company also announced it is delivering software intelligence, including observability, application security, and advanced AIOps capabilities, as code.

According to the "IBM Cyber Resilient Organization" study, 46% of respondents have experienced a ransomware attack over the past 2 years. To help companies better detect and recover quickly from ransomware and other cyberattacks, IBM recently unveiled IBM FlashSystem Cyber Vault. The company also announced new FlashSystem storage models—based on IBM Spectrum Virtualize to provide a single and consistent operating environment—that are designed to increase cyber resilience and application performance within a hybrid cloud environment.

IBM has announced new capabilities designed to modernize applications across hybrid cloud environments. These include plans to deliver IBM Z as-a-service on IBM Cloud for development and test in the second half of 2022, as well as additional tools for developing hybrid applications. According to the IBM Institute for Business Value study, "Application Modernization on the Mainframe," 71% of responding executives say mainframe-based applications are central to their business strategy.

Intel has announced plans for an initial investment of more than $20 billion in the construction of two new leading-edge chip factories in Ohio. The investment will help boost production to meet the surging demand for advanced semiconductors. Planning for the first two factories will start immediately, with construction expected to begin late in 2022. Production is expected to come online in 2025, when the fab will deliver chips using the industry's most advanced transistor technologies.

NVIDIA announced that its AI Enterprise 1.1 is now generally available, bringing new updates including production support for containerized AI with the NVIDIA software on VMware vSphere with Tanzu, which was previously only available on a trial basis. Now, enterprises can run accelerated AI workloads on vSphere, running in both Kubernetes containers and virtual machines with NVIDIA AI Enterprise to support advanced AI development on mainstream IT infrastructure.

Oracle has announced the availability of its first cloud region in Africa to meet the rapidly growing demand for enterprise cloud services on the continent. The Oracle Cloud Johannesburg Region will boost cloud adoption across Africa while also helping businesses achieve better performance and drive continuous innovation. The opening marks Oracle's 37th cloud region worldwide with plans to have at least 44 cloud regions by the end of 2022, continuing one of the fastest expansions of any major cloud provider.

IBM has announced that LG Electronics has joined the IBM Quantum Network to advance the industry applications of quantum computing. By joining the IBM Quantum Network, IBM will provide LG Electronics access to IBM's quantum computing systems, as well as to IBM's quantum expertise and Qiskit, IBM's open source quantum information software development kit.

Ensono, an end-to-end managed services provider, has acquired ExperSolve, a mainframe modernization company. The addition of ExperSolve further expands Ensono's mainframe optimization and modernization services. "Whether its modernizing applications so they can continue to be supported on existing infrastructure, or migrating them to a cloud platform, our goal is to have a robust set of end-to-end or lifecycle solutions that help our clients meet their business outcomes," said said Larry Goldberg, senior vice president, advisory and consulting, at Ensono.

Software AG has joined the IBM Z and Cloud Modernization Center, a "digital front door" comprised of tools, training, and ecosystem partners to help IBM Z clients accelerate the modernization of their applications, data and processes in an open hybrid cloud architecture. According to the companies, the aim of the collaboration is to remove barriers to mainframe modernization for clients by using APIs to connect mainframe applications to the cloud without altering any code.

SXiQ will join IBM Consulting's Hybrid Cloud Services business, helping IBM capitalize on a rapidly growing cloud professional services market which is projected to surpass $200 billion globally by 2024.

Hazelcast provides a streaming and memory-first application platform for stateful, data-intensive workloads on-prem, at the edge, or as a fully managed cloud service. The company recently  announced version 5.0 of the Hazelcast Platform in which the Hazelcast IMDG and Hazelcast Jet products have been merged into a single product to not only simplify the development of applications using Hazelcast but also put more focus on developing real-time applications that will engage with end users in new ways. Hazelcast CEO Kelly Herrell shared more information about the new release as well as the company's future road map.
