To help companies evaluate big data systems, a new benchmark has been launched by the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC). TPCx-HS is a major achievement for two reasons, noted Raghunath Nambiar, chairman of the TPCx-HS committee, and a distinguished engineer at Cisco. It is the first vendor-neutral benchmark focused on big data systems - which have become a critical part of the enterprise IT ecosystem. TPCx-HS is also the first Express-class benchmark issued by the TPC.

Violin Memory, a provider of all-flash storage arrays and appliances delivering application solutions for the enterprise, has introduced data deduplication and compression capabilities in its Concerto 2200 solution. According to Violin Memory, the new Concerto 2200 array update with inline deduplication and compression gives customers maximum storage efficiency, with deduplication rates commonly between 6:1 and 10:1.

Scientists from IBM, AT&T, and Applied Communication Sciences (ACS) have announced a proof-of-concept for technology that reduces set-up times for cloud-to-cloud connectivity from days to seconds."This technology not only represents a new ability to scale big data workloads and cloud computing resources in a single environment but the elastic bandwidth model removes the inefficiency in consumption versus cost for cloud-to-cloud connectivity," said Douglas Freimuth, IBM Research senior technical staff member and master inventor.

At the summer 2014 SHARE conference in Pittsburgh, Brian Peterson, who has been president of SHARE for the past two years, spoke about the challenges facing companies today as they deal with emerging IT requirements and the successful approaches for dealing with the mainframe skills shortage. With SHARE's 60th anniversary coming up, Peterson also reflected on the role SHARE has played in the world economy by supporting technology that is critical to industries such as banking, transportation, and manufacturing.

Oracle has released Oracle Linux 7, which provides support for emerging technologies, such as OpenStack, as well as new Linux innovations, tools, and features. Oracle's Exadata Database Machine X4-8 has been enhanced to provide large performance and memory increases compared to the previous generation. Hardware enhancements include 50% more database compute cores, using the Intel Xeon E7 v2 15-core processors, and up to 6TB of memory per compute node for a total of 12TB per rack. The result, says Oracle, is that the Exadata Database Machine X4-8 can consolidate hundreds of databases and can run massive databases entirely in-memory.

Riak CS (Cloud Storage) 1.5 and Riak CS 1.5 Enterprise, Basho's distributed object storage software, is targeted at companies dealing with large amounts of unstructured data, such as videos, images and documents. With this release, Riak CS introduces expanded storage API compatibility with Amazon S3 and features for more flexible integration with content delivery networks (CDNs).

IBM has acquired CrossIdeas, a privately held provider of security software that governs user access to applications and data across on-premise and cloud environments. Based in Rome, Italy, CrossIdeas addresses the business requirements of auditors and risk and compliance managers withrole analytics, visualizations for better insight into user access, and alignment with compliance and access risk requirements. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The Exadata Database Machine X4-8 has been designed to deliver extreme compute and data throughput for large database workloads using 8-socket database servers, intelligent storage, PCI flash cards, and unified InfiniBand connectivity. The Exadata Database Machine X4-8 expecially suited for a number of large scale enterprise scenarios, said Tim Shetler, vice president of product management, Oracle. "It is an ideal platform for hosting memory-intensive workloads such as the Oracle Database In-Memory option."
