Data Integration

Traditional approaches to the process of combining disparate data types into a cohesive, unified, organized view involve manual coding and scripting. The need for Real-Time Business Intelligence and the ability to leverage a wider variety of data sources is driving companies to embrace new ways to achieve Data Integration, including Data Virtualization, Master Data Management, and Integration Automation.

As data from the Internet of Things is emerging and changing the data landscape as we know it, a new set of challenges are rising. IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second are stunning organizations. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository.

Recently, the revised Markets in Financial Instruments Directions (MiFID II) launched in the EU. The sweeping regulatory changes will impact transaction reporting on all financial instruments traded in Europe and affect all U.S. firms that do business with European counterparts or customers. Firms will face new requirements in tracking data—including emails, texts, and documents related to every transaction—and will need to be able to quickly reconstruct trades and search across data silos,  presenting a significant challenge. Here, Ken Krupa, CTO at enterprise database company MarkLogic, discusses the impact to U.S. firms, and how new regulations underscore the importance of increasing transparency, consumer protection, and data integrity.

For enterprises storing sensitive data in the cloud, an enhanced security strategy is key to monitoring and protecting that data. In fact, according to Oracle research, 40% of respondents say that detecting and responding to cloud security incidents is now their top cyber security challenge. As part of efforts to address this concern, four in 10 companies have hired dedicated cloud security architects, while 84% say they are committed to using more automation to effectively defend against sophisticated attackers.

The serverless computing architecture—sometimes called function as a service or FaaS—hides not just the underlying virtual machine, but also the application server itself. The cloud simply agrees to execute your code on demand or in response to an event.

Keeping data highly available is no longer a simple matter of backing up one database with an up-to-the-second copy of another. Today's enterprise data environments are complex, with many database platforms and modes of computing. A hybrid data infrastructure calls for new approaches to data replication. This is one of the takeaways of a recent survey of 285 IT managers and professionals, conducted by Unisphere Research among members of the Independent Oracle Users Group.

Many large modern enterprises are data-aware. They deploy processes to transform raw data into information using a variety of data integration, data management, and business intelligence (BI) tools. However, being data-aware, or even data-driven, does not necessarily mean that they are insights-driven.

DBAs can recover a database, tune SQL, and may even know how to write some PL/SQL when push comes to shove. And, yes, those are all great skills to have. But in 2018, DBAs need more, writes Matt Malcheski in a new IOUG SELECT article. Malcheski goes over the "hot topics," including blockchain, AI, and Internet of Things, and notes that DBAs of the future will need to understand not only the technical aspects of these and the other technologies but also must be able understand and add value to the functional data requirements necessary for all-encompassing solutions. "This is characterized in a data point from Gartner: By 2021, 40% of IT staff will be 'versatilists' holding multiple roles, most of which will be business rather than technology related."

Duplicates are often the exact opposite of what we want. The discovery of one's evil clone, for instance, would be far from an ideal scenario in most people's minds. In all seriousness, though, one hardly needs look to science fiction for examples of how the proliferation of duplicates is a common nuisance of our modern lives. Multiple envelopes in your mail containing the exact same bill, for example, or multiple copies of the exact same file cluttering up your hard drive are common and annoying problems—even in our digital age. Indeed, in the world of computer programming there are entire disciplines dedicated to optimizing applications or data structures through the elimination of unnecessary duplicates.
