Percona, a provider of enterprise-class MySQL and MongoDB solutions and services, is introducing Percona Server for MongoDB, an enhanced, open source, fully compatible drop-in replacement for MongoDB Community Edition that offers additional enterprise features and lower total cost of ownership. Completely open source and free to download and use, Percona Server for MongoDB offers all the features of MongoDB 3.0 Community Edition, along with two additional storage engine options - PerconaFT and Facebook's RocksDB - and enterprise-grade functionality, including Simple Authentication and Security Layer (SASL) and advanced auditing.

MapR Technologies, Inc., a provider of a distribution for Apache Hadoop, has extended its support for SAS, a provider of business analytics software and services. According to the vendors, the collaboration between SAS and MapR provides advanced analytics with ease of data preparation and integration with legacy systems, assurance of SLAs, and security and data governance compliance. Additionally, joint customers can cost-effectively grow their big data storage infrastructure without relying on storage area network (SAN) or network-attached storage (NAS).

In my last column, I discussed shadow IT and suggested that this might be the future of IT rather than an anomaly. Reframing what IT might look like in the future, and acknowledging that it could be radically different than it is today, is a challenging task but not an impossible one. In fact, I would suggest that such reframing is necessary if IT is to remain relevant.

Anyone who thought Hadoop was a fly-by-night technology was wrong. Hadoop has rapidly evolved—improving and gaining mainstream adoption as a technology and framework for enabling data applications previously out of reach for all but the savviest of companies. Cisco announced it would offer network infrastructure systems that would directly support Apple devices. The Apple and Cisco partnership is intended to optimize Cisco networks for iOS devices and apps, integrating iPhone with Cisco enterprise environments and providing collaboration on iPhone and iPad. Apple and Cisco also said they are working together to promote the iPhone as a business collaboration tool in Cisco voice and video environments, to better integrate iPhones and desk phones.

IBM is acquiring StrongLoop, Inc., a software provider, to help developers connect enterprise applications to mobile, Internet of Things (IoT) and web applications in the cloud. StrongLoop is a provider of application development software - known as enterprise Node.js - that enables software developers to build applications using APIs (application programming interfaces). Financial terms and conditions were not released.

VMware recently made a slew of announcements spanning cloud deployments, data center, and devices. The company introduced what it calls the first fully automated software suite for delivering the software-defined data center as an integrated system. Serving as a foundation of VMware's Unified Hybrid Cloud platform, the solution, called VMware EVO SDDC, will extend the virtualization principals of abstraction, pooling and automation across all data center resources and services.

Syncsort, a provider of specialized solutions for big data, is making a major open source contribution to the IBM z Systems mainframe with a connector for Apache Spark. Syncsort's mainframe connector conforms to Spark's Data Sources API specification, and because of Spark's ability operate on data in memory, the connector will allow queries to access mainframe data without offloading the data first.

MongoDB, an open source database, is coming to the mainframe. In recent weeks, the Linux Foundation announced the Open Mainframe Project, which seeks to broaden the set of tools and resources that are intended to drive development and collaboration of mainframe Linux. These announcements are indications that the mainframe is increasingly evolving to an open-source machine, increasingly putting it in range of small-to-medium enterprises - and new markets.

Hortonworks, a provider of enterprise Hadoop, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Onyara, Inc., the creator of and key contributor to Apache NiFi, an open source project. The acquisition will make it easy for customers to automate and secure data flows fueling the fueling the "Internet of Anything (IoAT)" and to collect, conduct and curate real-time business insights and actions derived from data in motion. As a result of the acquisition, Hortonworks is introducing Hortonworks DataFlow powered by Apache NiFi, which was made available through the NSA Technology Transfer Program in the fall of 2014. The Hortonworks acquisition of Onyara is expected to close in the third quarter of 2015.

Basho Technologies, the creator and developer of Riak software, has announced that, in collaboration with Cisco, it has developed a framework enabling the Riak KV NoSQL database to run on Apache Mesos, bringing operational efficiency and high-elasticity to big data services. "The goal is to try and simplify and make it easy for clients to get business solutions as quickly as possible instead of worrying about the distributed data tier," said Adam Wray, CEO of Basho.

Ricoh Company, Ltd, the printing and document management company, is using Oracle's SPARC T5 servers with Oracle ZFS Storage Appliances and Oracle Database to analyze data from RICOH @Remote, its real-time support service for customers in more than 100 countries and regions. To unify the data across the company for accurate views and analysis, Ricoh built a private cloud accessible by the entire remote service group that allows high speed access from internal networks.
