The year 2015 started out with people recognizing that the Hadoop ecosystem is here to stay, and ended as the year in which organizations achieved real success within the Hadoop ecosystem. Today, more projects are popping up within the Hadoop ecosystem that can run both with and without Hadoop. The great thing about this trend is that it lowers the barrier to entry for people to get started with these technologies. More importantly, all of these new technologies work best at large scale within the rest of the Hadoop ecosystem, while Hadoop MapReduce has begun its ride off into the sunset.

Recent shifts are driving the adoption of a number of technologies and tools, including containers, which are garnering big attention from investors. The primary advantage of containers is allowing applications to look uniform as they cross between non-production and production environments, and between on-premise and cloud. However, containers on their own, while critical to speeding adoption of DevOps and hybrid cloud deployment, are not sufficient.

Exponential data growth is hitting organizations of all sizes hard. It's not enough to merely add more capacity; recovery point objectives must be met, and time is money when it comes to data recovery. The simple truth is that to be effectively managed, adequately protected and completely recovered, your data size must be shrunk.

Today, the success of many startups hinges upon the ability to gain insights from rapidly growing data. Yet startups and smaller businesses often don't have the resources to hire a full-scale data science team, especially considering the painful data scientist shortage that's making it difficult for even large enterprises to find qualified candidates. Here are three approaches companies can adopt to deal with their big and complex data analytics challenges in 2016.

Traditionally, the cardinal rule has been to model data first and load it later. But with new technologies and repositories such as Hadoop, NoSQL, and data lakes, and big data itself, the rule is being flipped to load first and model later. And, with SQL remaining an effective and widely embraced query language, companies have to balance working with traditional methods against the need for some of the newer methods as well.

Moving infrastructure, databases, or software into the cloud is no longer a bleeding edge decision. Many organizations have implemented this successfully with great benefits, and more continue to do so. It was not that long ago that we started learning about cloud technologies and capabilities. Technologists listened to webinars and read about the possibilities of such a paradigm shift with cynicism. It sounded great, but what about the practicalities, cost, and risk? The only organizations that seemed to embrace this new landscape were technology companies, while the rest of us stood on the sidelines watching and, on occasion, snickering. We thought nothing would ever replace our data centers. It appears we were wrong … it's time to embrace the paradigm shift.
