IBM announced its new zEnterprise BC12 (zBC12) mainframe, designed for enhanced analytics, cloud, and mobile computing. Priced at $75,000 for the base model, IBM says it is targeting smaller organizations. The computer giant says it is also adding new industry solutions and software and operating systems across its zEnterprise portfolio, designed for financial services and government operations.

NuoDB, provider of a NewSQL database, has announced the beta program for a new tool that facilitates migration from MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, PostgreSQL and Oracle RDBMSs. The migration tool is open source and available for free download on the NuoDB DevCenter or on GitHub.

IBM says it is accelerating its Linux on Power initiative with the new PowerLinux 7R4 server as well as new software and middleware applications geared for big data, analytics and next generation Java applications in an open cloud environment. According to IBM, the new PowerLinux 7R4 server, built on the same Power Systems platform running IBM's Watson cognitive computing solution, can provide clients the performance required for the new business-critical and data-intensive workloads increasingly being deployed in Linux environments. IBM is also expanding the portfolio of software for Power Systems with the availability of IBM Cognos Business Intelligence and EnterpriseDB database software, each optimized for Linux on Power.

After four years of operating BigCouch in production, Cloudant has merged the BigCouch code back into the open source Apache CouchDB project. Cloudant provides a database-as-a-service and CouchDB serves as the foundation of Cloudant's technology. The company developed BigCouch, an open source variant of CouchDB, to support large-scale, globally distributed applications.There are three main reasons Cloudant is doing this, Adam Kocoloski, co-founder and CTO at Cloudant, told 5 Minute Briefing in an interview.

Oracle announced the 12c releases of Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF), Oracle JDeveloper, and Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse. Enhancing the productivity of developers and allowing them to better leverage the Oracle platform, the new releases support Cloud Application Foundation product family 12c releases - Oracle WebLogic Server 12.1.2 and Oracle Coherence 12.1.2.

Oracle has announced the latest 12c releases of its Cloud Application Foundation, which integrates application server and in-memory data grid capabilities into a foundation for cloud computing, representing "a major release of our middleware infrastructure," Mike Lehmann, Oracle vice president of product management, tells 5 Minute Briefing. The focus for the products is to provide mission-critical cloud infrastructure and a lot of work has been done around native cloud capabilities, says Lehmann.

Big data analytics provider Actian is putting assets from the recent acquisition of ParAccel, Pervasive Software and Versant Corporation to work. The company announced plans to offer two new platforms, the Actian DataCloud and ParAccel Big Data Analytics Platforms. The Actian DataCloud and ParAccel Big Data Analytics Platforms are designed to provide end-to-end capabilities, from data connection through preparation and analytics, all the way to automated action. Built on technology that takes advantage of advances in chips, cores and clusters, the company says the platforms provide clients with integration and analytics on any data.

Oracle Database 12c is available for download from Oracle Technology Network (OTN). First announced by Oracle CEO Larry Ellison during his keynote at Oracle OpenWorld 2012, Oracle Database 12c introduces a new multi-tenant architecture that simplifies the process of consolidating databases onto the cloud; enabling customers to manage many databases as one - without changing their applications. During the OpenWorld keynote, Ellison described Oracle Database 12c as "the first multi-tenant database in the world" and said it provides "a fundamentally new architecture" to "introduce the notion of a container database" with the ability to plug in multiple separate, private databases into that single container.

IBM says that it has completed the acquisition of SoftLayer Technologies Inc., a privately held cloud computing infrastructure company based in Dallas, Texas, for an undisclosed sum. The initial acquisition agreement was announced on June 4th, and is the basis of IBM's new cloud services division, which combines SoftLayer with IBM SmartCloud.

SAP plans to acquire hybris, an e-commerce software company. SAP says the combination of its own enterprise solutions combined with e-commerce solutions from hybris will provide enterprises with the enhanced data and tools necessary to optimize margins and customer loyalty. Upon completion of the transaction, expected in the third quarter of 2013 and subject to regulatory approval and other closing conditions, SAP says hybris will operate as an independent business unit and will retain its existing management team led by Ariel Ludi, CEO, and Carsten Thoma, president and co-founder, of hybris.

What are the key factors in organizations' decisions to implement services via a private cloud versus a public cloud? According to a recent study of 262 data managers and professionals, most of whom are part of the IOUG, two out of three respondents point to the security and privacy concerns created by cloud. Thirty-seven percent also see advantages in terms of long-term costs over public clouds. Public cloud services may be cheaper up front since they only require monthly subscription or pay-by-use fees, but the long-term costs may exceed the initial investments in private cloud infrastructure.

The new software, Progress Pacific, is the foundation of a major PaaS (platform-as-a-service) transformation Progress previously announced. Expanding its position in the cloud computing market segment, IBM announced plans to acquire SoftLayer Technologies, Inc., a privately held cloud computing infrastructure provider headquartered in Dallas, Texas. IBM also announced the formation of a new Cloud Services division. Following the close of the acquisition of SoftLayer, which is expected in 3Q 2013, the new division will combine SoftLayer with IBM SmartCloud into a global platform.

Cloudera Enterprise is now certified to run on VMware VSphere. OpenText, a provider of enterprise information management (EIM) software, announced the expansion of the OpenText ECM Suite for SAP Solutions in support of SAP's latest technologies, including the SAP HANA platform, and cloud and mobility solutions. This support builds on a partnership that spans more than two decades and is growing every year, says Patrick Barnert, senior vice president, Partners and Alliances, OpenText. Software AG has launched a cloud-based Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) suite, intended to support the building of cloud-based applications. The Software AG Live suite, now available, includes integration and business process management capabilities. In addition, Software AG says it will be releasing a new version of Software AG's webMethods Integration Server that supports elastic scaling across hybrid deployments - public cloud, private cloud and on-premise. The new release, branded as Dynamic Cloud Scaling, will be available in the second half of 2013.

Cloudant, a provider of a globally distributed database-as-a-service (DBaaS), has announced $12 million in series B funding from Devonshire Investors, the private equity firm affiliated with Fidelity Investments; RackspaceHosting, the open cloud leader; and Toba Capital. The company also announced that current investors — Avalon Ventures, In-Q-Tel, Samsung Venture Investment Corporation — purchased additional shares. The funding will be used to support Cloudant's global expansion and grow the company's support, service, and go-to-market strategies.

PerspecSys Inc., a provider of cloud data protection solutions for the enterprise, announced it has raised $12 million in funding co-led by new investors Paladin Capital Group and Ascent Venture Partners, and joined by return backer Intel Capital and other existing institutional investors. The new round of financing, combined with Series A funding, brings the total investment in PerspecSys to over $20 million. With offices in the U.S., U.K. and Canada, PerspecSys aims to remove what it says are primary barriers to cloud adoption at the enterprise level - security and control.
