On June 20th, the Microsoft SQL Server team dropped the most recent release of SQL Operations Studio to the public. This is just one of many, many product announcements that demonstrate Microsoft's very serious commitment to interoperability and to meeting the needs of their customers wherever they reside, even if that's outside of the Microsoft ecosystem. One of the hallmarks of SQL Operations Studio, compared to the venerable SQL Server Management Studio, is that it's lightweight and expandable.

Hitachi Vantara has announced the expansion of the Hitachi Enterprise Cloud family of managed private and hybrid cloud "as-a-service" offerings, including new options for deploying cloud-native application environments. In addition, Hitach is introducing storage-as-a-service offerings that are pre-engineered for on-premises. These new as-a-service offerings are aimed at data center modernization and ensuring that customers realize the greatest value with Hitachi technology through outcome-based services.

Microsoft is now offering a third deployment option in preview which provides full SQL Server engine capability, including SQL Agent, along with native VNet support.

Oracle has announced availability of the Internet Intelligence Map which provides users with a simple, graphical way to track the health of the internet and gain insight into the impact of events such as natural disasters or state-imposed interruptions. Oracle's Internet Intelligence team frequently publishes data and analysis that informs public understanding of the technical underpinnings of the internet and its effects on topics like geopolitics and e-commerce. With the new availability of the Internet Intelligence Map, Oracle says it is now making core analytic capabilities available to everyone.

IBM has acquired Oniqua Holdings Pty Ltd., a global innovator in maintenance repair and operations (MRO) inventory optimization solutions and services focused on mining, oil & gas, transportation, utilities, manufacturing, and other asset-intensive industries. Through the acquisition, IBM seeks to expand its capabilities around reducing and optimizing MRO inventories, predicting when critical parts and equipment might fail so proactive actions can be taken to avoid unplanned downtime.

Microsoft has reached an agreement to acquire the software development platform GitHub. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will acquire GitHub for $7.5 billion in Microsoft stock. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of the calendar year. GitHub's current CEO, Chris Wanstrath, will become a Microsoft technical fellow, reporting to EVP Scott Guthrie, to work on strategic software initiatives.
