A new offering from Wharfedale Technologies Inc. (WFT Cloud) is designed to help companies migrate their existing implementations of the SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse application to the SAP HANA platform in a private cloud managed by WFT Cloud. The service by WFT Cloud includes an upgrade at no additional charge of the customer's existing implementation of SAP NetWeaver BW to version 7.3.

IBM has agreed to acquire Cloudant, Inc., a database-as-a-service (DBaaS) provider that enables developers to create mobile and web apps. Following the close, which is expected to take place in the first quarter of 2014, Cloudant will join IBM's newly formed Information and Analytics Group led by Senior Vice President Bob Picciano, a business unit within the IBM Software & Systems Group.

Oracle and Pluribus Networks have formed a technology access agreement. The arrangement is intended to offer customers the ability to use OpenStack plug-ins to manage their cloud environments based on Oracle Solaris and Pluribus Networks' Netvisor. This builds on the newly completed certification of Oracle Solaris 11 on Pluribus Networks' Freedom series Server-Switch platform, which is already allowing customers to take advantage of the unique performance, scalability, efficiency and security advantages of Oracle Solaris in their network infrastructure.

Oracle has announced the fifth generation database machine, the Oracle Exadata Database Machine X4, which adds enhancements to improve performance and quality of service for OLTP, DBaaS (database as a service), and data warehousing. Tim Shetler, vice president of product management, Oracle, shared his views on the update in an interview. "There is no price change with this generation. It is the same price as before. We are just giving customers more capacity and more performance," said Shetler.

When it comes to implementing a big data strategy in a Microsoft SQL Server shop, you're generally going to consider three approaches, one of which is a cloud implementation. SQL Server 2012, and even more so in the upcoming SQL Server 2014 release, has built out a very strong Apache Hadoop infrastructure on Windows Azure called HDInsight. IBM reported a difficult year for the 12-month period ended December 31, 2013. For the fourth quarter of the 2013 fiscal year, the company reported revenues of $27.7 billion, down 5% from the same time one year ago, and mainframe sales were weak during this time.
