Cloud is being embraced strongly at Oracle. That is the message loud and clear from the company, which brought its CloudWorld to New York City on January 13. During the event, which drew customers, analysts, and thought leaders, Oracle offered an overview of its cloud strategy and the progress the company has made thus far in addressing consumers and enterprise constituents in the cloud. Oracle's cloud strategy is very simple, said Thomas Kurian, president, Oracle Product Development. The idea is to bring Oracle's business applications, technology, software, database, middleware, analytic tools and infrastructure "to any customer anywhere in the world through the internet browser."

SOA Software, a cloud services management vendor, announced an updated solution that provides broader support for API description languages including RAML, Swagger, WSDL, and WADL. The vendor's API Management platform now supports for multiple API Description Languages (API DL), intended to help enterprises secure, manage, and monetize APIs described in RAML, Swagger, WSDL, or WADL. "API DL languages are still evolving - new languages are emerging and as of now, there is no clear leader," said Alistair Farquharson, CTO of SOA Software.

CloudLink Technologies, a provider of cloud security and data encryption management solutions has added CloudLink SecureVM support for Microsoft Azure Key Vault, a cloud-hosted HSM-backed service for managing cryptographic keys and other secrets used in your cloud applications. According to the companies, with this solution, the cloud provider is responsible for key generation and storage. The customer, as the data owner, controls the security policy that regulates encryption key access and use.

Basho Technologies, the creator and developer of Riak, a distributed NoSQL database, has closed a $25 million Series G funding round led by existing investor Georgetown Partners. The additional funding is being used to expand development and marketing activities, the company said.

For the 22nd consecutive year, IBM topped the annual list of U.S. patent recipients. The company just announced that it received a record 7,534 patents in 2014, and that on average, IBM inventors earned more than 20 patents a day. After IBM, the next top patent earner in 2014 was Samsung with 4,952. During IBM's 22 years at the top of the patent list, IBM inventors have received more than 81,500 U.S. patents.

IBM is partnering with Equinix, Inc., an interconnection and data center company, to help provide enterprises direct access to the full portfolio of cloud services from SoftLayer, an IBM Company, via the Equinix Cloud Exchange. Equinix also announced Cloud Exchange enhancements, including API functionality that makes it easier for service providers to use a single interface to the Cloud Exchange, resulting in scalable, private and secure connections to their cloud services with near real-time provisioning.

Espresso Logic is adding data virtualization for mobile and web app back-end developers to its reactive programming-based back-end-as-a-service (BaaS). "We have a very unique technology that we have developed called reactive programming. As a user, whenever the spreadsheet is changed it will always recalculate itself and give you a result. Neil Mendelson, Oracle vice president of big data and advanced analytics, shared Oracle's "Top 7" big data predictions for 2015. Rackspace has announced its affiliation with the OpenPOWER Foundation, and is now an official member. Rackspace announced its affiliation with OpenPOWER in a blog authored by Aaron Sullivan, senior director and distinguished engineer at Rackspace. According to Sullivan, Rackspace has already been involved with OpenPOWER for more than 18 months. "We worked amongst the founders for months before the foundation launched, and remained engaged after launch, but chose to remain quiet. We've been evaluating the technology and the movement for quite some time," noted Sullivan.

Oracle has announced its latest-generation NAS storage system, the Oracle ZFS Storage ZS4-4. Co-engineered with Oracle Database 12c, the ZFS Storage ZS4-4 provides analytics for pluggable databases, doubles previous generation performance to enable faster time to actionable intelligence, and also provides high-level protection against security breaches with fine-grained encryption capabilities. The OS 8.3 adds over 30 enhancements and three new innovations that expand Oracle's leadership in NAS performance, efficiency, and application-engineered storage, said Oracle executive vice president John Fowler.

Exploding data assets and the need for greater agility are helping to drive the move to virtualization. More than two-thirds of organizations in a recent Unisphere Research survey among members of the Independent Oracle Users Group indicate that the number of Oracle databases they manage is expanding. At the same time, many managers admit that their IT departments are sluggish when it comes to responding to new business requirements. For more than 50% of organizations, it takes their IT department 30 days or more to respond to new initiatives or deploy new solutions. For one-quarter of organizations, it takes 90 days or more.

GoGrid, an infrastructure-as-a-service provider specializing in multi-cloud solutions, is partnering with Cloudera, a provider of Hadoop-based software and services. The partnership will allow companies to evaluate and run the platform for big data through Cloudera Live. Traditional methods of deploying Hadoop require on-premise work to be done to just test potential solutions. The GoGrid-Cloudera partnership allows customers to run Cloudera with GoGrid's cloud infrastructure. What makes GoGrid unique is its 1-Button Deploy orchestration process, according to John Keagy, founder and CEO of GoGrid.

(AWS), an Amazon.com company, announced the Amazon EC2 Container Service, a container management service intended to make it easier to run and manage distributed applications using containers on AWS.
