IBM has announced that the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform is generally available for IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE. According to IBM, the availability of OpenShift for Z and LinuxONE is a major milestone for both hybrid multi-cloud and for enterprise computing. OpenShift supports cloud-native applications being built once and deployed anywhere—and now extends this to on-premise enterprise servers such as IBM Z and LinuxONE. The offering is the result of the collaboration between the IBM and Red Hat development teams and discussions with early adopter clients.

Google has completed its acquisition of Looker. "As more organizations adopt a multi-cloud strategy, Looker customers and partners can expect continued support of all cloud data management systems like Amazon Redshift, Azure SQL, Snowflake, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and Teradata," said Thomas Kurian, CEO, Google Cloud.

Hazelcast, an open source in-memory computing platform, has announced an additional $28.5 million in funding, bringing its total Series D round to $50 million. Hazelcast raised an initial $21.5 million in Series D funding in June but, given the interest from the investor community, the company said, it expanded the round.

Oracle has been extending its cloud reach with announcements of new partnerships, additional cloud developers and engineers, and more cloud regions. Recently, Steve Daheb, senior vice president, Oracle Cloud, talked with Big Data Quarterly about how the company's cloud strategy has evolved and how customers' use of Oracle technology is changing. Gen 1 of cloud was about moving workloads from on-prem, but the next step will be about how companies can take advantage of new technologies to improve their processes in ways not possible before.

While organizations are adopting cloud for some areas of their database estate, very few are migrating totally. DBAs now need to manage hybrid estates that combine on-premise and cloud deployments. No wonder that 23% of respondents see migrating to the cloud and integrating with the cloud as their biggest challenge over the next 12 months. Ensuring they have the ability to monitor their entire estate from a single tool is therefore vital if DBAs are to remain on top of their workloads.

What's so special about Azure Arc? The private preview of Azure Arc currently includes support for Azure SQL Database and Azure Database for PostgreSQL Hyperscale. But it's not hard to imagine a scenario where you might have a single management system that cov­ers a disparate a selection of computing resources such as on-premise physical servers, Hyper-V and VMware virtual machines, a few old Oracle databases running on Linux, some open source software built on PostgreSQL, a selection of external clusters running on AWS and Google Cloud Platform, and a new installation of Azure Stack.

For years, if not decades, database managers have been struggling with the challenges of providing as much access as possible to corporate informa­tion assets while at the same time protect­ing these crown jewels. All of this work, of course, has had to take place within the confines of relatively tight budget and resource constraints. Now, a new generation of solutions and platforms holds great promise in releasing profes­sionals from the more mundane aspects of their jobs to devote more time to the activities that matter to their businesses. However, even with database automation and cloud resources abundantly available on the market, many database managers still spend inordinate amounts of time on low-level tasks.

IBM inventors received 9,262 U.S. patents in 2019, achieving a milestone of most patents ever awarded to a U.S. company, and marking the company's 27th consecutive year of U.S. patent leadership. In 2019, IBM led the industry in the number of U.S. patents granted across key technology areas such as AI, blockchain, cloud computing, quantum computing and security.

Arvind Krishna has been elected as the CEO of IBM and a member of its board of directors. In this role, Krishna succeeds Virginia "Ginni" Rometty, IBM chairman, president, and CEO, who will continue as executive chairman of the board and serve through the end of the year, when she will retire after almost 40 years with the company. Announcing the executive changes on January 30, IBM said that Krishna, who is currently IBM SVP for Cloud and Cognitive Software, and was a principal architect of the company's acquisition of Red Hat, would assume the job on April 6, 2020. James Whitehurst, IBM SVP and CEO of Red Hat, was also elected by the board as IBM president, effective April 6, 2020
