SAP has completed its acquisition of Altiscale, which provides a high-performance, scalable Big Data-as-a-Service (BDaaS) solution that includes full operational services. The company announced this acquisition at Strata + Hadoop 2016 in New York City. With this acquisition Altiscale will operate as a focused and integrated BDaaS offering from SAP to help accelerate and operationalize Big Data deployment in the enterprise.

Oracle has announced the general availability of the Oracle Bare Metal Cloud Services, which was first introduced at Oracle OpenWorld in September by Oracle chairman and CTO Larry Ellison. Billed as "the cloud for your most demanding workloads," the Bare Metal Cloud Services offering is a public cloud that offers bare metal compute in a virtualized, high performance network environment.

Snowflake Computing is making its platform more accessible to users with Snowflake On Demand—a sign-up process for data users to get immediate insight from Snowflake's data warehouse. According to the vendor, with a virtual swipe of a credit card on Snowflake's website, data users can access the only data warehouse built for the cloud. They can store and analyze their data without relying on their own IT group to get up and running quickly.

Ending industry speculation, today, VMware and former rival Amazon Web Services (AWS) officially announced a partnership to provide a new hybrid cloud service dubbed, "VMware Cloud on AWS." In a joint announcement, the companies said the strategic alliance to build and deliver an integrated hybrid offering will give customers a full software-defined data center (SDDC), enabling customers to run applications across VMware vSphere-based private, public, and hybrid cloud environments. The partnership was initiated because customers are asking the companies to help make it easier to run their existing data center investments alongside AWS.

In a recent survey of 2,151 Java Virtual Machine developers and IT professionals from Lightbend, most agree that containers are likely to supplant Java VMs. Containers represent an advance in operating system portability that encapsulates or creates "containers" for applications and their dependencies. A majority of developers, 57%, said containers will definitely disrupt the Java VM landscape, while 32% were not quite sure yet. Close to one-fourth, 22%, said they are already running containers in production. Another 31% report they are playing around with containers on their local machines, while 20% are starting to evaluate containers.
