In a recent survey of 2,151 Java Virtual Machine developers and IT professionals from Lightbend, most agree that containers are likely to supplant Java VMs. Containers represent an advance in operating system portability that encapsulates or creates "containers" for applications and their dependencies. A majority of developers, 57%, said containers will definitely disrupt the Java VM landscape, while 32% were not quite sure yet. Close to one-fourth, 22%, said they are already running containers in production. Another 31% report they are playing around with containers on their local machines, while 20% are starting to evaluate containers.

When it comes to automation, the data center is ripe for potential job losses, a new report from McKinsey warns. Data processing-related activities have a 69% percent probability of being automated in the near-term, the report's authors predict. Data collection-related tasks have a 64% chance of being automated. The hardest activities to automate, McKinsey observes, "are those that involve managing and developing people (nine percent automation potential) or that apply expertise to decision making, planning, or creative work (18%).

Oracle is acquiring LogFire, a provider of cloud-based warehouse management applications for integrated warehouse, inventory and workforce management. The pending addition of LogFire Cloud is expected to complement the logistics functionality of the Oracle Supply Chain Management product suite by adding cloud-based warehouse management capabilities. Oracle also said it is currently reviewing the existing LogFire product roadmap and will be providing guidance to customers.
