In my last column, I discussed shadow IT and suggested that this might be the future of IT rather than an anomaly. Reframing what IT might look like in the future, and acknowledging that it could be radically different than it is today, is a challenging task but not an impossible one. In fact, I would suggest that such reframing is necessary if IT is to remain relevant.

Many considerations go into evaluating whether it is time to implement an upgrade to a new version of SQL Server. You need to think about socket vs. core licensing, side-by-side vs in-place upgrades, and resource provisioning. Maybe your SQL instance is a good candidate for ‘cloudification'? And, what new functionality, like SQL Server's new cardinality estimator or a database's Target Recovery Time setting, would you like to take advantage of?

By now, we all know the value of big data analytics. In the 1990s, data mining and business intelligence (BI) efforts were used mostly for after-the-fact reporting and problem solving. The need for these capabilities will always remain, and high levels of confidence and investment in these disciplines will continue. However, the current focus on big data analytics emphasizes predicting and influencing the future, based on real-time analysis of 100% of enterprise data.
