Oracle announced this morning that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Sun Microsystems, on the heels of a breakdown of a proposed acquisition by IBM. The transaction is valued at approximately $7.4 billion, or $5.6 billion net of Sun's cash and debt.

According to a recent report, Microsoft says that it wants to reduce the overall data center energy consumption by 50% to 60%, and reduce energy consumption across the rest of the company by at least 30 percent. IBM has already announced green data center capabilities with similar goals.

Cisco has announced its intent to acquire Tidal Software, Inc., a privately held data center management provider. Tidal's intelligent application management and automation solutions that will advance Cisco's aggressive data center strategy, a Cisco spokesperson says. Under the terms of the agreement, Cisco will pay approximately $105 million in cash and retention-based incentives.

Vision Solutions, a high availability and disaster recovery solutions provider, has announced the availability of Vision PowerPacks, new offerings that combine Vision Solutions software with IBM technologies. By combining complementary hardware and software technologies, the new PowerPacks are intended to enable customers to more easily acquire turnkey high availability, disaster recovery and migration solutions, the vendor says.

While concern about data "doubling each year" is a common IT refrain, there may be signs that it is not quite that bad. According to the results of a recent online survey by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, Inc., in which 461 database professionals participated, 63.8% of respondents' companies experienced 0-24% data growth last year. Also, according to the survey, 16.2% of respondents' organizations had data growth of 25-49%, and only 7.1% had data growth of 50-100% last year. At the extremes, 9.5% of respondents' companies had no increase or decline, and 3.4% had data growth of more than 100%.

There may be concerns that companies will be operating with tighter budgets this year, but data centers will continue to expand or proliferate. Digital Realty Trust, a large wholesale data center provider, surveyed 300 companies, and found that 84% are planning data center expansions in the next 12-24 months.

Progress Actional 8.0 Enterprise, the vendor says, delivers "business transaction assurance" by providing full design-time to run-time application lifecycle validation, and execution-time visibility and control for distributed applications. The goal is to help businesses avoid losing a single important transaction, Progress says.

Oracle has announced availability of Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Release 5 (10gR5).With this release, the integrated top down management now extends across the full Oracle software stack, from applications to middleware, database, Linux, as well as virtualization. "Enterprise Manager manages everything from applications down.
