Databricks is partnering with RStudio, providers of a free and open-source integrated development environment for R, to increase the productivity of data science teams and allow both companies to integrate Databricks' Unified Analytics Platform with the RStudio Server. The RStudio and Databricks integration removes the barriers that stop most R-based machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) projects.

Hitachi Vantara has announced the expansion of the Hitachi Enterprise Cloud family of managed private and hybrid cloud "as-a-service" offerings, including new options for deploying cloud-native application environments. In addition, Hitach is introducing storage-as-a-service offerings that are pre-engineered for on-premises. These new as-a-service offerings are aimed at data center modernization and ensuring that customers realize the greatest value with Hitachi technology through outcome-based services.

BlueData, provider of a Big-Data-as-a-Service (BDaaS) software platform, is releasing updates for its BlueData EPIC platform, building upon innovations for large-scale distributed analytics and machine learning (ML) workloads on Docker containers. This summer release is the result of collaboration with BlueData's enterprise customers to develop new functionality in each of these areas to support their Big Data and AI initiatives - as they extend well beyond Hadoop and Spark to a range of different ML / DL and data science workloads, and beyond on-premises infrastructure to public cloud and hybrid architectures.

Coinciding with the International Supercomputing Conference, the TOP500 List of supercomputers has been announced. For the first time since November 2012, the U.S. claimed the most powerful supercomputer in the world, leading a significant turnover in which four of the five top systems were either new or substantially upgraded. With the announcement, the TOP500 is also marking its 25th anniversary.

Oracle has announced availability of the Internet Intelligence Map which provides users with a simple, graphical way to track the health of the internet and gain insight into the impact of events such as natural disasters or state-imposed interruptions. Oracle's Internet Intelligence team frequently publishes data and analysis that informs public understanding of the technical underpinnings of the internet and its effects on topics like geopolitics and e-commerce. With the new availability of the Internet Intelligence Map, Oracle says it is now making core analytic capabilities available to everyone.

The Crate Machine Data Platform helps companies put machine data to work even faster, by simplifying the time-consuming job of building and operating the data management "plumbing" that forms the foundation for IoT systems.

Microsoft has reached an agreement to acquire the software development platform GitHub. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will acquire GitHub for $7.5 billion in Microsoft stock. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of the calendar year. GitHub's current CEO, Chris Wanstrath, will become a Microsoft technical fellow, reporting to EVP Scott Guthrie, to work on strategic software initiatives.

NVMe quickly gained a foothold in the client space as the storage interface of choice for higher end desktops, laptops, and even phones. In the enterprise space NVMe has been used as a direct-attached storage (DAS) option, where storage is accessed through a PCIe interface on the CPU within the server. The advent of NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) promises to expand the utility of NVMe in the datacenter beyond just a DAS replacement, which will push the demand for flash storage even higher.

At GTC Taiwan today NVIDIA introduced HGX-2, a unified computing platform for both artificial intelligence and high performance computing. According to NVIDIA, the HGX-2 cloud server platform provides unique flexibility to support the future of computing, enabling high-precision calculations using FP64 and FP32 for scientific computing and simulations, while also providing FP16 and Int8 for AI training and inference. The result is a level of versatility that meets the requirements of the growing number of applications that combine HPC with AI, according to the company.
