Jaspersoft, a BI software provider, has announced the development of what it describes as the first BI architected for platform-as-a-service, with the planned integration of Jaspersoft BI with Red Hat's OpenShift PaaS. "With Jaspersoft's suite of reporting and analysis capabilities now available on OpenShift, organizations can quickly realize the benefits of the cloud while gaining deep insights from the data that powers these applications," says Scott Crenshaw, vice president, Cloud Business Unit at Red Hat.

The promise is immense - harness all the available information within the enterprise, regardless of data model or source, and mine it for insights that can't be seen any other way. In short, senior managers become more effective at business planning, spotting emerging trends and opportunities and anticipating crises because they have the means to see both the metaphorical trees and the forest at the same time. However, big data technologies don't come without a cost.

The first calendar year following SAP's acquisition of Sybase is coming to a close. David Jonker, director, product marketing - Data Management & Analytics, Sybase, discusses key product integrations, IT trends that loom large in Sybase's data management strategies, and the emergence of what Sybase describes as DW 2.0. 2011 has been "a foundational year," with effort focused on making Sybase technologies work with SAP and setting the stage for 2012, says Jonker. "We believe 2012 is going to be a big year for us on the database side."

EMC Corporation has introduced the EMC Greenplum Unified Analytics Platform (UAP), a platform to support big data analytics, that combines the co-processing of structured and unstructured data with a productivity engine that enables collaboration among data scientists. The new EMC Greenplum UAP brings together the EMC Greenplum database for structured data, the enterprise Hadoop offering EMC Greenplum HD for the analysis and processing of unstructured data, and EMC Greenplum Chorus, its new productivity engine for data science teams. Greenplum UAP will be available in the first quarter of calendar 2012.

LogiXML, a provider of web-based business intelligence (BI) software, announced that it has received a $10 million investment led by Summit Partners, a growth equity firm that invests in rapidly growing companies. Also participating in the round is Grotech Ventures, an existing LogiXML investor. The funds will be used to accelerate LogiXML's growth and expand the company's share of the BI and analytics software market.

The release of OpenInsight 9.3, the next version of Revelation Software's flagship product, is now imminent, and includes many new features eagerly awaited by Revelation customers. On track to be generally available by the end of the year, Robert Catalano, director of sales at Revelation, says that data encryption is among the major new components in OpenInsight 9.3. "Data encryption will be a key component that will be built into the database. It is data encryption at rest and that means that you can specify tables and fields that are sitting in on your disk drive and that data will be encrypted."

SAP AG has announced the availability of SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse (SAP NetWeaver BW) 7.3 running on the SAP HANA platform. SAP HANA can enhance the query performance and provide faster data loads in SAP NetWeaver BW, and help customers significantly reduce the total cost of ownership for customers by simplifying the administration with reduced data layers, according to SAP. The announcement was made at the SAPPHIRE NOW and SAP TechEd co-located event in Madrid.

Oracle has entered into an agreement to acquire Endeca Technologies, Inc., a provider of unstructured data management, web commerce and business intelligence solutions. "Together, we will provide best-in-class technology to manage structured and unstructured data together; business intelligence tools to analyze structured and unstructured data together; and a broad suite of packaged applications which extends the value of unstructured data into ERP, Supply Chain, CRM, EPM, Web Commerce, and specialized applications," said Thomas Kurian, executive vice president, Oracle Development, in an announcement issued by Oracle. "This technology will also allow us to integrate more comprehensive unstructured data management into Oracle's engineered systems."

Teradata, a data analytic data solutions provider, announced the latest update to its flagship data warehouse product, as well as new features in its data warehouse appliance. Teradata Database 14 is designed as the analytical engine for powering all of the vendor's "purpose-built" platform family members - from enterprise data warehouses to appliances. "We're including big data application support," says Scott Gnau, president of Teradata Labs at a briefing at the vendor's recent user group event.

At its Information on Demand Conference, IBM unveiled its latest business analytics appliance, the IBM Netezza Network Analytics Accelerator, which helps communications services providers (CSPs) leverage and gain insights from big data in a timeframe that can make a difference in their business. "Developing a deep understanding of the customer, their experience, and their digital lifestyle means CSPs can better allocate network resources and create more targeted services using IBM analytics. This is both a challenge and opportunity for CSPs, and those that embrace analytics now will gain a competitive advantage," says Scott Stainken, general manager, IBM Global Telecommunications Industry.

At IBM's 2011 Business Analytics Forum, IBM unveiled new software that brings the power of managing and analyzing big data to the workplace. Jaspersoft, a maker of business intelligence (BI) software, has released Jaspersoft Business Intelligence Suite 4.2 featuring mobile BI capabilities designed to make applications easier to build for developers and easier to use for executives and managers on the move. Jaspersoft 4.2 delivers what the company describes as the industry's first open source mobile BI iOS software development kit (SDK) for embedding BI in native mobile applications as well as for building native mobile BI applications. A new survey of contact center leaders reveals that the average amount of idle time per day per employee is nearly an hour, as respondents report 49 minutes daily per agent on average. Knowlagent, provider of an agent productivity solution for 10 million call center agents, has released this and other findings from its 2011 Customer Contact Center Productivity Survey. Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, conducted the survey in August, which included input from 312 contact center executives, managers or supervisors. The Knowlagent survey sought to understand contact center management's biggest challenges, and how they are leveraging technology, measuring productivity and performance, and delivering training.

At SAP TechEd 2011 in Las Vegas, SAP AG announced two new solutions built on SAP HANA, the company's in-memory computing platform. The two new solutions - SAP Smart Meter Analytics software powered by SAP HANA and SAP COPA Accelerator software - were developed by SAP product and design teams working in collaboration with customers. According to SAP the new applications will provide users with real-time insight into "big data," allowing them to leverage large amounts of information for analysis, planning, and forecasting and simulations in a more fluid, natural way versus traditional approaches.
