To maximize the value of analytics investments, enterprises need to incorporate big data into their enterprise data management strategies - which often still include mainframe or large systems. At a recent DBTA roundtable webinar, Jamie Morgan, senior solutions architect at HPE Security - Data Security, and Kevin Petrie, senior director and technology evangelist at Attunity, advocated the concept of "data-centric" security. By applying format-preserving encryption, users can allow wider access to their data lake. The platform promotes end-to end data movement, offers a breadth of sources and targets, and delivers optimized high performance.

Are enterprises more or less secure than 5 years ago? That's the big question of the moment, especially with ongoing revelations about state-sponsored hacking, as well as an unending stream of reports about customer and employee data being compromised by even the most seemingly security-conscious organizations. Awareness of data security is running at a fever pitch at the highest levels of government and business organizations. There have been plenty of technology advances, and awareness has grown. Still, the wave of breaches and threats never seems to abate, and likely never will.

Imagine you are standing by a railway track near a lever that switches between two sets of tracks. A runaway rail trolley is heading toward the fork in the tracks, and five people are trapped on the currently activated line. You could switch the trolley to the alternative track, but there is a single person trapped there as well. Do you switch the trolley? The artificial intelligence community is increasingly wrestling with similar moral conundrums implicit in the ever-more pervasive algorithms that underlie much of our technological infrastructure.

No one solution can be all things to all enterprises, and as enterprises began to deploy vSAN across their environments, they noticed a big thing was missing. Despite its many benefits, vSAN lacks support for a file system. The importance of having a file system within a data center cannot be overstated. Without a file system, the guest VMs (virtual machines) cannot share files between them and are forced to use an external NAS (network attached storage) solution as shared storage. Without a file system overlaying this data, it becomes laborious and impossible to scale efficiently.

Our friends at Compuware recently published a how-to guide on successfully introducing DevOps to the mainframe world. Among the advice given is to modernize mainframe environments as much as possible. "A modernized mainframe workspace should possess the look and feel of the Eclipse-style IDEs that have become the de facto standard for other platforms. This user-friendly interface will allow staff at all experience levels to move easily between development and testing as they work on both mainframe and non-mainframe applications. Your modernized mainframe IDE will also support a complementary palette of value-added tools as you continue your mainframe transformation." Just as important: Agile training for staff.

The role of the DBA is growing and becoming more complicated in the age of digital transformation. As the amount and type of information we store expands, DBAs must become versed in administering not just one type of DBMS (e.g., relational), but multiple types (document, key/value, wide column stores, and graph) and even non-DBMS data platforms (e.g., Hadoop). Furthermore, cloud computing can change the manner in which existing applications and databases operate.

Regardless of the object of discussion, answering certain upfront questions can act as a guide to help you along the path to the right solution. Given the increasing importance, complexity, and breadth of database systems, the question of whether to build or to buy database monitoring is an important one to consider.
