Veryant has introduced a new version of vCOBOL Enterprise, which provides an environment for developing and deploying business-critical COBOL applications across Linux, UNIX, and Microsoft Windows systems. With vCOBOL Enterprise 2011 Release 3, organizations that migrate COBOL applications and relational databases, such as IBM DB2, from the mainframe to open systems can now take advantage of a new application migration utility to simplify the transition. In addition, post-migration, vCOBOL now offers companies the choice of accessing relational databases, such as IBM DB2 or Oracle, through JDBC or through the SQLJ convention, which the company says is popular at shops that are heavy Java application users.

UC4, an IT automation software vendor, announced a partnership with Basis Technologies International (BTI), a provider of add-on solutions that optimize SAP, intended to deliver targeted automation solutions for SAP customers. The joint offering, dubbed "UC4 MDR powered by BTI," will integrate BTI's Mass Data Runtime - an SAP NetWeaver-based solution that delivers data processing improvements - with UC4's ONE Automation platform. The combination of these two products is designed to help accelerate and orchestrate business processes, applications and infrastructure with SAP environments.

SAP AG has announced the availability of SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse (SAP NetWeaver BW) 7.3 running on the SAP HANA platform. SAP HANA can enhance the query performance and provide faster data loads in SAP NetWeaver BW, and help customers significantly reduce the total cost of ownership for customers by simplifying the administration with reduced data layers, according to SAP. The announcement was made at the SAPPHIRE NOW and SAP TechEd co-located event in Madrid.

Cleversafe, Inc. has been granted and issued four new patents by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) related to the vendor's IP portfolio around dispersed storage technology. The technology uses algorithms to divide data into "slices" and disperses them, via secure network connections, to one or more multiple storage nodes on a dsNet system.

IBM announced that technology enabling IBM zEnterprise System users to integrate Microsoft Windows applications into the mainframe environment - an industry first - will become available on December 16th. With this new capability, end users with multi-tier applications - for example, Windows applications connected to mainframe data - can be integrated and consolidated on the same system.

ADVA Optical Networking announced the successful qualification of the ADVA FSP 3000 for the IBM zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension. The IBM zEnterprise platform, which includes zBX, is the new infrastructure for extending System z qualities of service and management capabilities across a set of integrated, fit-for-purpose POWER7 and IBM System x compute elements. This extension enables applications that require low-latency, high-capacity and secure data transmission links between systems, such as business continuity, disaster recovery and cloud computing.

Attachmate Corp. has made updates to two of its flagship products for terminal emulation and web-to-host access. The Attachmate Reflection 2011 R2 family of products is updated Windows-based terminal emulation software that includes strengthened desktop and host security. Attachmate Reflection Suite for X 2011 R2 is designed to enable Windows users to access text and graphics-based applications on UNIX and Linux systems, as well as legacy applications on IBM System z mainframes and System i midranges.

EnterpriseDB, a commercial software company supporting the PostgreSQL open source database, has announced the Postgres Plus Connector for Hadoop, which enables massive amounts of data from a Postgres Plus Advanced Server (PPAS) or PostgreSQL database to be accessed, processed and analyzed in a Hadoop cluster. The Postgres Plus Connector for Hadoop enables programmers to process large amounts of SQL-based data using their familiar MapReduce constructs. EnterpriseDB has opened a private Postgres Plus Connector for Hadoop beta program.

Unisys Corporation recently reported third-quarter 2011 net income from continuing operations of $78.6 million, compared with third-quarter 2010 net income from continuing operations of $21.8 million. Revenue in the third quarter of 2011 grew 6% to $1.02 billion compared with $961 million in the year-ago quarter. Foreign currency fluctuations had a positive impact on revenue in the quarter of almost 6 percentage points, the company said. "This was a strong quarter for Unisys," said Unisys chairman and CEO Ed Coleman during a Unisys webcast announcing the quarter results. "We grew our revenue and tripled EPS from continuing operations as we benefited from the foundational work we've been doing to strengthening our competitive and financial profile."

Unisys has announced additions to its family of voice-messaging solutions that enable telecommunications services providers to host a greater number of services more efficiently and give mobile subscribers new options for reaching contacts and accessing their voice messages. Anchoring the solutions is the VSE Model 412 server, the newest member of the Unisys VoiceSource Express (VSE) 400 Series of messaging and converged user services platforms. Unisys also introduced new software-based solutions that make managing voice messages simpler for subscribers using smartphones and less fully configured feature phones.

SUSE has released an early development snapshot of its OpenStack-powered cloud infrastructure solution. SUSE Cloud powered by OpenStack, says SUSE, is the industry's first, fully configured, OpenStack-powered appliance based on OpenStack's latest version, Diablo. It is also the first public preview of SUSE's hypervisor-agnostic, operating system neutral, open source cloud infrastructure solution.

Clerity Solutions, a provider of mainframe modernization solutions, announced a statement of direction for its newly designed Windows- and .NET managed-code version of the company's UniKix Mainframe Rehosting software. It will include migrating mainframe applications to the Windows Azure cloud. IBM unveiled what it calls the industry's most advanced cloud services and software designed from the ground up for enterprise clients. New IBM SmartCloud services and capabilities provide greater choice, security and portability for cloud implementations, the company says. IBM also says it plans to support about 200 million users by the end of 2012 as clients shift core applications and processes to the IBM SmartCloud.

IBM has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Platform Computing, a privately held company headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Platform Computing is a provider of cluster and grid management software for distributed computing environments. The acquisition is anticipated to close in the fourth quarter of 2011, subject to the satisfaction of closing conditions. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Red Hat, Inc. has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Gluster, Inc., a provider of open source unstructured data storage solutions, for approximately $136 million in cash. With this acquisition, Red Hat says it will improve how enterprise IT manages the explosion of big data, whether on-premise or spanning into the public cloud; and expand into a critical part of enterprise infrastructure, delivering open storage solutions that protect customer investments as they approach the new era of computing.

UNICOM Systems, Inc., a provider of IBM mainframe, System i, Unix and Open Systems management solutions, has acquired the Boston-based international software company, iET Solutions, LLC from Platinum Equity, LLC. The acquisition will boost UNICOM's reach in the IT Service Management (ITSM) and software asset management market space. New solutions coming out of the acquisition will complement UNICOM's existing ITPowerPac sites.

Motorola Solutions, Inc., a provider of enterprise communication products, software and services, has announced the availability of a web-based application framework designed to enable businesses to develop and deploy web-based applications on existing Motorola Windows Embedded Handheld (formerly known as Windows Mobile) and Windows Embedded Compact (Win-CE) mobile computers, as well as Motorola's recently announced ET1 Android-based enterprise tablet. Legacy IT systems were developed for - and still run - about 60% of all mission-critical applications. They are still stable and reliable. However, the maintenance on legacy applications over time has made them so complex that rather than helping to solve business problems, most legacy systems have become a challenge that enterprises are grappling with.
