A modern data architecture for business intelligence and analytics has to support structured, unstructured, and semi-structured sources, as well as hybrid integration and also meet the analytical needs of a wide range of users spanning casual information consumers, power users, and data scientists.  At Data Summit 2018, Richard Sherman, managing partner of the consultancy Athena IT Solutions, presented a talk on "Designing a Data Architecture for Modern Business Intelligence & Analytics." Sherman cautioned against falling into the "one-tool-fits-all" trap.

IBM has acquired Oniqua Holdings Pty Ltd., a global innovator in maintenance repair and operations (MRO) inventory optimization solutions and services focused on mining, oil & gas, transportation, utilities, manufacturing, and other asset-intensive industries. Through the acquisition, IBM seeks to expand its capabilities around reducing and optimizing MRO inventories, predicting when critical parts and equipment might fail so proactive actions can be taken to avoid unplanned downtime.

At DataWorks Summit, its conference in San Jose this week, Hortonworks is unveiling a major new release of the Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) as well as expanded partnerships with Microsoft, Google, and IBM. Tableau Software has acquired Empirical Systems, an AI startup that originated at the MIT Probabilistic Computing Project. Based in Cambridge, Mass., Empirical Systems has a team of engineers and data science professionals who created an analysis platform that helps customers to automatically analyze and understand their structured data. Empirical was co-founded by CEO Richard Tibbetts, who previously co-founded StreamBase (acquired by TIBCO); engineering lead Madeleine Thompson, formerly of Google; and scientific advisor Vikash Mansinghka, who leads the MIT Probabilistic Computing Project.

Oracle has announced the availability of its next-generation Oracle Cloud Platform services featuring built-in autonomous capabilities, including Oracle Mobile Cloud Enterprise, Oracle Data Integration Platform Cloud, and Oracle API Platform Cloud. With embedded artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning that enable autonomous capabilities in the Platform Cloud services, Oracle says it is helping organizations to more easily develop new user experiences with chatbot and voice capabilities, to enable business users to perform intelligent data integration tasks, and to expose business logic and data via robust API design/management.

Calling it the last upgrade you'll ever do, Oracle CTO and chairman Larry Ellison yesterday unveiled "the world's first automated enterprise cloud application upgrade product" which will enable Oracle customers to reduce the time and cost of cloud migration by up to 30%. In fact, said Ellison, during a webcast showcasing the new features, it is now easier to move from Oracle E-Business Suite to Oracle Fusion ERP in the cloud than it is to upgrade from one version of E-Business Suite to another. "And, when you are in the cloud, that is the last upgrade you will ever do because all upgrades are in the cloud and done automatically."

Microsoft has reached an agreement to acquire the software development platform GitHub. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will acquire GitHub for $7.5 billion in Microsoft stock. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of the calendar year. GitHub's current CEO, Chris Wanstrath, will become a Microsoft technical fellow, reporting to EVP Scott Guthrie, to work on strategic software initiatives.
