Backup and recovery solution provider Sepaton has introduced the S2100-ES3 series 2925 backup appliance with new version 7.1 software. The data protection platform adds support of Gresham Enterprise DistribuTape (EDT) version 10.0 to allow IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) users to automate key TSM virtual tape implementation processes; and extends support for KMIP-compliant enterprise key managers with qualification of SafeNet KeySecure version 6.3 EKM. The appliance also gives administrators the flexibility to backup and deduplicate data using Symantec NetBackup OpenStorage (OST) over Fibre Channel in addition to the existing IP connectivity.

Compuware Corporation, a technology performance tools company, is shipping a new solution set intended to expose how IT infrastructure conditions impede the performance of business applications. The new package, called PureStack Technology, combines with Compuware's dynaTrace PurePath Technology to directly correlate guest and host infrastructure health to individual application transactions and affected end users in real time.

Intel Corporation announced a solid-state drive (SSD) product designed for read-intensive applications such as Web hosting, cloud computing and data center virtualization. The Intel Solid-State Drive DC S3500 Series is designed to replace traditional hard disk drives, the vendor says.

Cisco has announced its intent to acquire Composite Software, a privately held company specializing in data virtualization software and services. Headquartered in San Mateo, Calif., Composite provides data virtualization software that enables a simplified and optimized logical view of data from multiple sources across the network, giving applications and business users the ability to access and query all types of data as if it is in a single place. According to Cisco, the acquisition of Composite will expand its Smart Services portfolio and extend its services platform by optimizing data and connecting to the infrastructure layer, enhancing programmability and use of APIs for Cisco customers.

Oracle announced the general availability of MySQL Cluster 7.3, which adds foreign key support, a new NoSQL JavaScript Connector for node.js, and an auto-installer to make setting up clusters easier. MySQL Cluster is an open source, auto-sharded, real-time, ACID-compliant transactional database with no single point of failure, designed for advanced web, cloud, social and mobile applications. Dell has released Toad for Oracle 12.0 which provides developers and DBAs with a key new capability - a seamless connection to the Toad World user community so they will no longer have to exit the tool and open a browser to gain access to the community. Datawatch Corporation, a provider of information optimization solutions, has agreed to acquire Panopticon Software AB, a privately held Swedish company specializing in the delivery of real-time visual data discovery solutions. The transaction is expected to be completed before the end of Datawatch's fiscal year September 30. Software AG has agreed to acquire Apama, a platform for complex event processing (CEP) and CEP-powered solutions, from Progress Software. Apama CEP allows organizations to correlate and analyze business activities across multiple data streams in real-time and take immediate action in response. "Data can lose its value in an instant," said Robin Gilthorpe, CEO of Software AG's Terracotta and member of the Software AG Group Executive Board. Composite Software has released the Composite Data Virtualization Platform 6.2 SP3. This release really has four elements, Robert Eve, executive vice president of marketing, Composite, tells 5 Minute Briefing. It updates the Hortonworks, Cloudera and the Apache Distribution of Hadoop big data integrations through the HiveServer2 interface, and then fourth, provides new access to Cloudera CDH through Impala. "The key problem with big data is that there are not enough people that are skilled at the big data tools to use them effectively," Eve notes.

Dell and Oracle have announced an expanded worldwide alliance, through which the two companies will introduce a new x86 infrastructure offering that combines Dell's hardware with Oracle's software. As part of the agreement, Oracle has named Dell a preferred x86 partner, and Dell has named Oracle a preferred enterprise infrastructure partner, including Oracle Linux. The expanded partnership represents an extension of Oracle's engineered systems strategy, said Oracle president Mark Hurd.

Yarra Valley Water (YVW) has implemented an Oracle Engineered Systems infrastructure to provide a standardized IT architecture aimed at helping the utility to improve business systems performance, achieve a better ROI and enhance customer service. SunGard Availability Services, a provider of information availability and disaster recovery services, has introduced support for virtualized platforms for its SunGard Managed Oracle Services. David Jonker, senior director, Big Data Marketing, SAP, recently highlighted the results of a new big data survey, the "2013 Big Data Opportunities Survey." According to the research, contrary to the perception that big data only provides value when it is crunched on the type of large-scale clustering technologies used by web companies, many big data issues are being successfully addressed now by conventional technologies such as relational databases. But while many respondents believe their current technology is capable of helping them manage and capitalize on big data, they also are concerned about gaining faster access to their large datasets.

HP and SAP AG are making progress on a joint initiative, code-named "Project Kraken," to improve business processes and mitigate risks for customers. Unveiled last January, Project Kraken is a co-innovation effort between HP and SAP, built from years of HP server technology innovations and optimized with the in-memory SAP HANA database for SAP Business Suite. The prototype system was demonstrated for the first time at SAPPHIRE NOW in Orlando, Fla.
