To help organizations prevent internal and external attacks from reaching their enterprise database targets, Oracle has introduced Oracle Database Firewall, which is intended to act as the "first line of defense for databases." According to Oracle, the new software solution monitors database activity on the network to help prevent unauthorized access, SQL injections, privilege or role escalation, and other external and internal attacks in real time. "In the same way that most companies have deployed network firewalls to stop intruders from coming into their data centers," Vipin Samar, vice president of Database Security, Oracle, tells 5 Minute Briefing, "Oracle Database Firewall is blocking unauthorized traffic from getting to the database itself."

CorreLog, Inc., a provider of log management and security solutions, says it has begun shipping a z/OS agent that helps organizations correlate mainframe security events with security events from Windows, Linux, UNIX, routers, firewalls, and and instantly notify the appropriate personnel in the event of a security threat or breach. The new product, CorreLog Agent for z/OS, works with the CorreLog Security Correlation Server, to enable organizations to monitor enterprise IT security, including mainframes, from a central viewpoint, says George Faucher, president of CorreLog. "For many customers, an IBM mainframe is their most strategic box. However, until now, they had no way of viewing it as part of their enterprise security picture."

A new toolset designed to streamline common and complex tasks associated with developing, administering and optimizing Oracle databases, has been announced by Embarcadero. The new toolset, called DB PowerStudio for Oracle, combines several of Embarcadero's most popular database tools into a suite that is intended to make it easier for Oracle developers and DBAs to shorten database development and administration times, and to improve the performance and availability of their databases. The toolset is available in a Developer Edition and a DBA Edition. The new release follows the introduction of a similar toolset by Embarcadero for SQL Server DBAs and developers.

Talend, an open source integration tools vendor, has announced the release of Talend Integration Factory, a production-ready distribution of the popular open source enterprise service bus (ESB) from the Apache Camel project. This announcement follows the December 2010 introduction of Talend Service Factory, a repackaged distribution of Apache CXF, optimized for the enterprise. The product initiatives leverage tools from SOPERA, which Talend acquired in November.

Idera, a provider of Microsoft SQL Server management and administration tools, has announced the latest version of its SQL Server backup and recovery solution, SQL safe 6.5. According to Idera, SQL safe reduces database backup time by up to 50% over native SQL backups, reduces backup disk space requirements by up to 95%, and enables complete "hands-free" automated backup of an organization's SQL Server infrastructure while ensuring compliance with backup and recovery policies.

F5 Networks, Inc., a Gold-level member of the Oracle PartnerNetwork, has announced integration between the F5 BIG-IP Application Security Manager (ASM) product and the Oracle Database Firewall. Building on F5's ability to help simplify database administration and accelerate database replication for Oracle customers, the integration provides improved SQL injection protection for F5 customers and correlated reporting for richer forensic information on SQL injection attacks for Oracle customers, according to F5.

It delivers a cloud infrastructure that provides network access, rapid elasticity and provisioning for pooled storage resources that are the key requirements for cloud computing. With Oracle Cloud File System customers can use Oracle Database features to manage application data stored outside of an Oracle Database.

Queplix Corp., a provider of data virtualization solutions, has introduced a virtual migration platform that enables users to rapidly migrate data from one application to another. The product, Queplix Virtual Migration Manager, is a new module of the Queplix Virtual Data Manager platform, and can reduce migration time from months to days, the vendor says. "Virtual Migration Manager uses the power of data virtualization to supercharge the ETL process," Michael Zuckerman, CMO of Queplix, tells 5 Minute Briefing. "We do this by eliminating much of the time and programming effort, and greatly simplifying the use of the Virtual Migration Manager toolset. Melissa Data Corp, a developer of data quality and address management solutions, today announced completion of CASS Cycle N certification. Certification of Melissa's software comes months ahead of the USPS July 31, 2011 expiration of CASS Cycle M. In order to continue to qualify for postal automation discounts, CASS vendors must deliver CASS Cycle N to their customers beginning May 1, 2011. With CASS Cycle N, SuiteLink, a USPS product that improves mail delivery by adding known secondary information (suite numbers) to business addresses, will be required for processing.

HP announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Vertica, a privately held, real-time analytics platform company based in Billerica, Mass. According to HP, the acquisition will enhance its capabilities for information optimization, adding sophisticated, real-time business analytics for large and complex sets of data in physical, virtual and cloud environments. Vertica's platform aims to help customers analyze massive amounts of data quickly, resulting in "just-in-time" business intelligence.

A new survey of 430 members of the Oracle Applications Users Group (OAUG) reveals that organizations lack a sense of urgency about securing critical data, and the greatest challenges to securing application and data environments are primarily organizational and budget related. The OAUG's 2011 Data Security report, "Managing Information in Insecure Times," was conducted by Unisphere Research, a division of Information today, Inc., in partnership with Application Security, Inc. (AppSec) in December 2010. Fifty-three percent of respondents stated that budget was the greatest impediment holding back information security efforts. Thirty-three percent claimed a lack of an understanding of the threats prevents them from rallying support for countermeasures. And more than one-quarter of respondents cited a disconnect between IT teams and executive management as a major impediment to implementing proper security measures.

Quest Software has unveiled support for Apache Hive in its two free NoSQL tools, Toad for Cloud Databases and OraOop. Additional enhancements include Eclipse support in Toad for Cloud Databases, and full support for Oracle RAC in OraOop. According to Billy Bosworth, vice president and general manager of Enterprise Database, Quest Software, Quest is adding adding functionality and additional platform support for Toad for Cloud Databases and OraOop almost in tandem with new demands it sees in the market. "Right now, we're seeing very strong adoption of the Hive system in conjunction with Hadoop, and we think the ability to store the output of Hive analytic queries in Oracle will benefit our customers by allowing them to integrate Hadoop data with traditional business intelligence solutions."

The new toolset, dubbed DB PowerStudio for SQL Server, combines several of Embarcadero's most popular database tools into a lower-cost studio offering. DB PowerStudio for SQL Server is available in two editions, a Developer Edition and a DBA Edition. Both editions include tools and capabilities including Rapid SQL, an integrated development environment that simplifies SQL scripting, query building, object management and version control in live databases or offline source code repositories. Verizon Communications Inc., a global telecom provider, announced it intends to acquire Terremark Worldwide Inc., a provider of managed IT infrastructure and cloud services, at a total equity value of $1.4 billion. Verizon expects to close the tender offer late in the first quarter of 2011. Investing in cloud computing - primarily private clouds - is a top priority for IT organizations for 2011, according to polls conducted by Unisys. A recent Unisys poll which was completed on January 24 found that 44% felt that 44% of the people responding expect to make cloud computing their top IT investment priority in 2011. By contrast, 24% named support for mobile/end user devices as their primary IT investment focus.

Unisys reported fourth quarter 2010 and full-year results for 2010. The company reported increased operating profit margin to 12.9% in 4Q10 and 9.3% for the full year.Other highlights included 5% growth in ClearPath sales for the full year, as well as technology revenue flat at $562 million for the full year compared to declines in prior years. The company also achieved 4Q10 services operating profit margin of 8%, the second consecutive quarter within targeted range of 8 - 10%. "We made continued progress against our priorities in 2010 and entered 2011 in what we believe is a strong competitive position," said Ed Coleman, Unisys chairman and CEO, in his comments on the financial results during the company's earnings call.

3X Systems has released version 3.0 of its 500 and Tera Series remote backup appliances, capable of automatically backing up Microsoft Windows-based servers, workstations, and laptops over the internet to a central storage device that delivers data protection and disaster recovery capabilities. Ingres Corporation, an analytic database vendor, has teamed up with Jaspersoft, a provider of business intelligence software, to certify deployments of Jaspersoft with Ingres VectorWise. Jaspersoft's business intelligence products were tested with Ingres VectorWise, and reportedly delivered faster query response times compared to other database solutions that run on Jaspersoft, the company says.

EMC has introduced a free Community Edition of the EMC Greenplum Database, the high-performance massively parallel processing (MPP) database product, along with free analytic algorithms and data mining tools. The new offering is intended to remove the cost barrier to entry for big data power tools for developers, data scientists, and other data professionals, according to EMC. This free set of tools will enable the community to better understand their data, gain deeper insights and better visualize insights, as well as contribute and participate in the development of new tools and solutions. With the Community Edition stack, developers can build complex applications to collect, analyze and operationalize big data leveraging big data tools including the Greenplum Database with its in-database analytic processing capabilities.
