Oracle has agreed to acquire GreenBytes, a provider of ZFS technology founded in 2007 with domain expertise in deduplication, replication, and virtualization. Oracle said that GreenBytes' technology complements its own storage solutions and is expected to enhance Oracle's ZFS Storage Appliances. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2014.

Oracle is offering a technology preview of an OpenStack distribution that allows Oracle Linux and Oracle VM users to work with the open source cloud software. The distribution is delivered as part of the Oracle Linux and Oracle VM Premier Support offerings, at no additional cost.

New Cloudera certification enables customers to use Tungsten Replicator 3.0 to replicate transactions from operational database systems such as MySQL, MariaDB and Oracle to Cloudera Enterprise 5 in real-time. The Cloudera certification confirms that the data replicated by Tungsten Replicator matches the source and target to ensure data quality, and does not stress either side of the replication stream in the process.

EMC is acquiring DSSD, Inc., a developer of rack-scale flash storage architecture for I/O-intensive in-memory databases and big data workloads. Ariba, an SAP company that provides cloud-based procurement solutions, is moving to SAP HANA, the company's in-memory platform for real-time computing. The initial step, involving the transition of Ariba Spend Visibility has been completed and the company is now shifting the Ariba Network to the platform. "We have been running cloud operations here for 15 years at Ariba, and we have a mature cloud platform, said SAP Ariba engineering vice president Mark Dao.

The Heartbleed vulnerability revelation has spurred industry action to strengthen open source offerings. IBM, along with Amazon Web Services, Cisco, Dell, Facebook, Fujitsu, Google, Intel, Microsoft, NetApp, RackSpace, and VMware, announced a new alliance, called the Core Infrastructure Initiative (CII), intended to provide more support to under-funded mission-critical open source projects.

At an event in NYC, Oracle president Mark Hurd and EVP John Fowler unveiled Solaris 11.2, which represents an evolution from operating system to a complete platform, they said. The phenomena of cloud and engineered systems are driven by the same requirement, which is the need to transfer work from the IT budget to the R&D budget to make things work more efficiently, observed Hurd, who asked, "Who really wants to glue an operating system to a server?"

It was a tough first quarter for IBM, including soft mainframe sales. Overall, the company saw first quarter revenues of $22.5 billion, down 4% from the first quarter of 2013. Net income was $2.4 billion, down 21% year-to-year.
