IBM has announced it has upgraded its Tivoli Storage Manager product with enhanced scalability, data deduplication tools, and new reporting and monitoring features. Part of IBM's Service Management strategy, Tivoli Service Manager 6 is intended to offer customers the visibility, control and automation required to maintain access to information while making more efficient use of storage resources.

Sentrigo, Inc., a provider of database security software, today announced FuzzOr, an open source fuzzing tool for Oracle databases designed to find vulnerabilities in software applications written in PL/SQL code. The new utility is intended to allow PL/SQL programmers, DBAs and security professionals to identify and repair vulnerabilities that may be exploited via SQL injection and buffer overflow attacks, techniques used by hackers to launch attacks on databases.

Oracle Data Vault has introduced support for collecting audit data from IBM DB2 for Linux, Unix and Windows (IBM DB2) and Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) database servers. Oracle had previously announced Audit Vault's capability to collect audit data from Microsoft SQL Server, in addition to Oracle Databases. As a result of the new capability, Oracle Audit Vault now captures audit data from IBM DB2 versions 8.2 and 9.5 and Sybase ASE versions 12.5 and 15.0, in addition to Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and 2005 and Oracle Database 11g.

Oracle has agreed to acquire mValent, a leading provider of application configuration management solutions. Oracle says that it expects the purchase of mValent to enhance Oracle Enterprise Manager with extensive capabilities for managing application configurations across IT environments. Customers are expected to benefit from increased operational productivity through automation, enhanced audit and governance, and improved application uptime.

Sonasoft Corporation, an independent software vendor that provides compliance, disaster recovery, and data protection solutions for the Microsoft platform, has announced the release of disaster recovery capability for its email archiving solution, SonaSafe for Email Archiving. SonaSafe for Email Archiving meets the regulatory compliance and e-discovery needs of organizations by capturing all incoming, outgoing, and internal emails and storing them in archive databases that run on Microsoft SQL Server. The product that provides the disaster recovery protection for these archives is SonaSafe for SQL Server, which creates live backups of SQL Server databases. By combining both of these products, SonaSoft provides disaster recovery protection for email archive servers through a common platform.

Available now, the new capabilities target critical requirements of large-scale enterprises that are building high-performance, complex applications in SOA environments. IBM announced today results from its annual 2008 "X-Force Trend and Risk" report, which found that corporations are unwittingly putting their own customers at risk for cybercriminal activity. With an alarming increase in attacks using legitimate business sites as launching pads for attacks against consumers, cybercriminals are literally turning businesses against their own customers in the ongoing effort to steal consumers' personal data, the study reveals.

As part of its "Mainframe 2.0" initiative, CA announced it has named Montreal-based Nexio Technologies as part of its business partner network to deliver "Out-Tasking" for Canada. Nexio will deliver turnkey management software and services solutions that will enable customers to better govern, manage, and secure their mainframe environments, despite budget and staffing constraints. Nexio has been a CA business partner for more than 10 years.

The Oracle Applications Users Group (OAUG), the world's largest user knowledgebase for Oracle Applications users, has elected Raymond Payne as the 2009 president of the OAUG and the OAUG executive committee for 2009. Citrix Systems, a provider of enterprise desktop infrastructure solutions, announced today that it will develop application and desktop delivery solutions optimized for Intel Core 2 desktops and Centrino 2 laptops with Intel vPro technology. Under an agreement with Intel Corporation, Citrix plans to produce a new class of virtualization solutions that optimize the delivery of applications and desktops to millions of Intel Core2 and Centrino 2 processor-based devices, intended to reduce the cost of desktop management.

IBM's fourth-quarter 2008 revenues of $27.0 billion decreased one percent, adjusting for currency, from the fourth quarter of 2007. Revenues from continuing operations for the entire fiscal year 2008 totaled $104 billion, an increase over $99 billion in 2007.

Quest Software has introduced LiteSpeed Engine for Oracle, bringing the high-performance backup compression and encryption it has offered in the SQL Server market, to the Oracle platform. According to Quest Software, LiteSpeed Engine for Oracle is tailored to the needs of Oracle and cross-platform DBAs, integrating seamlessly into Oracle's Recovery Manager (RMAN) and export backup strategies. Altosoft, a provider of process-aware business intelligence software solutions, has announced a partnership with Netezza Corporation, which develops and sells data warehouse and analytics appliances. As a result of the partnership, Altosoft's InsightBI business intelligence solution has been certified with the Netezza Performance Server (NPS) data warehouse appliances, and the two companies will collaborate on marketing and sales. Many Altosoft customers have already been running the company's software on Netezza appliances, and this partnership formalizes that combination by providing the market with a fully certified interoperable solution. While the two products are not physically bundled together and must still be purchased separately from the respective companies, their integration has been tested and proven and Altosoft is now a Certified Netezza Partner.

MicroStrategy, a provider of BI software, last week introduced MicroStrategy 9 at its annual user conference in Las Vegas. The theme for the new release, which the company considers to be its biggest in nearly a decade, is support for all business intelligence—not just enterprise BI for which MicroStrategy is well-known in the market—but also for departmental and workgroup BI, Brian Brinkmann, director of product marketing, tells 5 Minute Briefing. With this release, he says, MicroStrategy wanted to make sure "that we not only enhance our enterprise BI software piece with higher performance, better scale and more efficient BI, but we also wanted to make sure that we did things for the BI needs of the department and the workgroup."

Symantec Corp. said it is shipping Enterprise Vault 8.0, the newest version of its email and content archiving platform. Launched in conjunction with the 10-year anniversary of Enterprise Vault, version 8.0 helps customers reduce the costs of storing unstructured information such as email, file server, and SharePoint content. "As the solution for archiving has evolved over the years, we have taken a lot of the direct feedback and input from those customers of all size and applied that directly to Enterprise Vault 8.0," David Campbell, senior product marketing manager for Symantec, told 5 Minute Briefing. "We feel it is one of the most advanced archiving solutions on the market today."

Portfolio Manager, an SOA planning governance product, helps customers identify candidate services and build an SOA roadmap through SOA modeling (i.e., top-down analysis), asset identification (i.e., bottom-up application inventory), and SOA roadmap management (i.e., service identification, prioritization and allocation) processes.

Novell today announced it is shipping a Web-based application that taps into social networking methodologies to enhance enterprise configuration management database (CMDB) usability, accessibility and accuracy. myCMDB, a part of Novell's recent acquisition of Managed Objects, employs a community-based architecture, similar to social networking applications, to provide a single view of federated data center resources across any physical or virtual environment.

Netezza, a leader in data warehouse and analytic appliance, has announced its collaboration with Microsoft and the first part of its high-performance data integration strategy for Microsoft Business Intelligence As a result, according to the vendors, Microsoft customers can now take advantage of Netezza's high-speed terascale analytic capabilities and extend the value of their existing Microsoft BI investment, and Netezza customers will now have more choice through tighter integration and technology compatibility with Microsoft's SQL Server 2008.
