People will go to great lengths to avoid identity theft, and many say they would take legal action against government or private organizations that compromise their personal data, according to new research conducted by Unisys. Nearly 90% of the survey respondents said they would take some sort of action in the event of a data breach, ranging from conservative solutions like changing their passwords (87%) to those with more serious commercial implications, such as closing their accounts (76%) or taking legal action (53%).

Sybase has unveiled a new version of the Sybase IQ high performance column-based analytics database, due to be generally available by the end of November. "This really is an extension into big data - and big data is characterized by a lot of things - but we see the trends in the market around MapReduce and Hadoop in database analytics and we have added those capabilities into IQ 15. 4," Dan Lahl, director of product marketing at Sybase, tells 5 Minute Briefing. With the new release of IQ, he notes, Sybase IQ provides customers a "have it your way" approach.

MapR Technologies, Inc., a provider of an advanced distribution for Apache Hadoop, and Lucid Imagination, a commercial company for Apache Lucene and Apache Solr search technology, have announced a strategic partnership. The agreement will enable Lucid Imagination to integrate the dependability, ease of use and performance of the MapR Distribution with its LucidWorks search platform. The Oracle NoSQL Database, which was announced at Oracle OpenWorld, is now available for download from the Oracle Technology Network (OTN). Oracle also said that its new engineered system, the Oracle Big Data Appliance, an optimized platform for running the Oracle NoSQL Database and Oracle's other big data offerings that was also unveiled at OpenWorld, will ship in Q1 of the 2012 calendar year.

Oracle has entered into an agreement to acquire Endeca Technologies, Inc., a provider of unstructured data management, web commerce and business intelligence solutions. "Together, we will provide best-in-class technology to manage structured and unstructured data together; business intelligence tools to analyze structured and unstructured data together; and a broad suite of packaged applications which extends the value of unstructured data into ERP, Supply Chain, CRM, EPM, Web Commerce, and specialized applications," said Thomas Kurian, executive vice president, Oracle Development, in an announcement issued by Oracle. "This technology will also allow us to integrate more comprehensive unstructured data management into Oracle's engineered systems."

SUSE has released an early development snapshot of its OpenStack-powered cloud infrastructure solution. SUSE Cloud powered by OpenStack, says SUSE, is the industry's first, fully configured, OpenStack-powered appliance based on OpenStack's latest version, Diablo. It is also the first public preview of SUSE's hypervisor-agnostic, operating system neutral, open source cloud infrastructure solution.

Application Security, Inc. (AppSecInc), a provider of database security solutions, is introducing a new enterprise data security capability, DbProtect Active Response. "Active Response allows us to react in real time to policy violations with a tailored approach that is governed, based on specific events and policy violations we see and the environment that we are operating in," Josh Shaul, CTO of AppSecInc, tells 5 Minute Briefing. Rocket U2 now has an improved way of releasing clients and tools and instead of labeling them as UniData clients or UniVerse clients, it will now release U2 Clients and DB Tools that work for both databases. The first release, U2 Clients, consisting of the client APIs and DB Tools, will include the tools based on the Eclipse development platform.

Revelation Software drew attendees from not just the U.S., but also Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Germany, Switzerland, England and Canada, to its recent users conference held in Las Vegas. "We had representation from developers all over the world," says Robert Catalano, Revelation's director of sales. Oracle has entered into an agreement to acquire RightNow Technologies, Inc., a provider of cloud-based customer service, for $43 per share or approximately $1.5 billion net of RightNow's cash and debt. Teradata, a data analytic data solutions provider, announced the latest update to its flagship data warehouse product, as well as new features in its data warehouse appliance. Teradata Database 14 is designed as the analytical engine for powering all of the vendor's "purpose-built" platform family members - from enterprise data warehouses to appliances. IBM unveiled what it calls the industry's most advanced cloud services and software designed from the ground up for enterprise clients. New IBM SmartCloud services and capabilities provide greater choice, security and portability for cloud implementations, the company says. IBM also says it plans to support about 200 million users by the end of 2012 as clients shift core applications and processes to the IBM SmartCloud.

IBM has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Platform Computing, a privately held company headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Platform Computing is a provider of cluster and grid management software for distributed computing environments. The acquisition is anticipated to close in the fourth quarter of 2011, subject to the satisfaction of closing conditions. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Red Hat, Inc. has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Gluster, Inc., a provider of open source unstructured data storage solutions, for approximately $136 million in cash. With this acquisition, Red Hat says it will improve how enterprise IT manages the explosion of big data, whether on-premise or spanning into the public cloud; and expand into a critical part of enterprise infrastructure, delivering open storage solutions that protect customer investments as they approach the new era of computing.

IBM announced a definitive agreement to acquire privately held Q1 Labs, a Waltham, Massachusetts-based provider of security intelligence software. The move aims to accelerate IBM's efforts to help clients secure their enterprises by applying analytics to correlate information from key security domains and creating security dashboards for their organizations. Financial terms were not disclosed. Following the close of the acquisition, Q1 Labs will join the newly-formed IBM Security Systems division. The new division will be led by Brendan Hannigan, CEO of Q1 Labs.

UNICOM Systems, Inc., a provider of IBM mainframe, System i, Unix and Open Systems management solutions, has acquired the Boston-based international software company, iET Solutions, LLC from Platinum Equity, LLC. The acquisition will boost UNICOM's reach in the IT Service Management (ITSM) and software asset management market space. New solutions coming out of the acquisition will complement UNICOM's existing ITPowerPac sites.
