Cloudera is collaborating with Microsoft to build a new open source platform that will reduce the burden on application developers leveraging Spark. The two entities, together with other open source contributors, have built a new open source Apache licensed REST-based Spark Service, called Livy, which is still in early alpha development.

Teradata has introduced the Teradata Aster Connector for Spark, an integration of Apache Spark analytics with Teradata Aster Analytics. The connector enables pre-built analytics functions from both solutions to be executed from Aster Analytics, enabling anyone who can use Aster Analytics to also run advanced analytics on Spark without the need to learn or know Scala.

Attunity Ltd. is partnering with Microsoft Corp. to enable faster and easier adoption of Microsoft SQL Server 2016. The partnership allows Microsoft to tap into Attunity Replicate's data replication and change data capture technologies to achieve "zero-downtime migrations" from systems such as Oracle and others to SQL Server 2016.

Described as the "biggest leap forward in Microsoft data platform history" in a Microsoft Developer Network blog, the new release provides improvements in real-time operational analytics, visualizations on mobile devices, analytics, as well as new security technology and hybrid cloud scenarios.

"This is a Spark-focused distribution that combines Apache Spark with the real time, persistent, web-scale data layer of MapR," said Jack Norris, SVP, Data and Applications, MapR. Open Text Corporation, a provider of Enterprise Information Management solutions, is entering into a definitive agreement to acquire Recommind, Inc., a leading provider of eDiscovery, and information analytics. The transaction purchase price is approximately $163 million and with this acquisition, Recommind's eDiscovery platform will complement OpenText's own enterprise information management (EIM) solutions.

IBM intends to acquire EZ Legacy Ltd., an Israel-based application discovery company. The company's technology helps developers to understand and change mainframe code based on data displayed on a dashboard and other visualizations in order to ease the process of modernizing applications, exposing APIs and more efficiently leveraging development resources. Terms of the deal, which is expected to close in the second quarter of 2016, were not released.

CSC's board of directors has unanimously approved a plan to merge the company with the Enterprise Services segment of Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE. The strategic combination of the two businesses will create what the companies' executives called one of the world's largest pure-play IT services companies. The new company is expected to have annual revenues of $26 billion and more than 5,000 clients in 70 countries.

For the first time, scientists at IBM Research have demonstrated reliably storing three bits of data per cell using a relatively new memory technology known as phase-change memory (PCM). The current memory landscape spans from venerable DRAM to hard disk drives to ubiquitous flash. But in the last several years, PCM has attracted the industry's attention as a potential universal memory technology based on its combination of read/write speed, endurance, non-volatility and density. For example, PCM doesn't lose data when powered off, unlike DRAM, and the technology can endure at least 10 million write cycles, compared to an average flash USB stick, which tops out at 3,000 write cycles.

EMC has introduced UniK, an open source contribution that enables developers to deploy applications to the cloud and IoT devices by compiling application sources into unikernels. UniK as an open source project is recognized under the DevHigh5 program through EMC {code}, a program that supports and provides recognition to developers and partners for their open source contributions. By releasing UniK as a collaborative open source project, EMC expects the tool to help bring customers closer to cloud native application platforms through the choice of running applications with containers or unikernels.
