Cloud computing continues gaining strength in the enterprise, according to a new survey of 262 data managers and professionals, most of whom are part of the Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG). The IOUG survey, which explores the opportunities and challenges presented by cloud computing, was underwritten by Oracle Corporation and conducted by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, Inc.

The Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN) announced new enablement and specialization resources for the SPARC T5 and M5 servers, which recently joined the SPARC T4 servers to complete Oracle's SPARC family, spanning entry-level, midrange and high-end. The T5-8 running applications is faster than the largest T4 computer Oracle ever made and the M5-32 is 10 times faster than the M9000, said Oracle CEO Larry Ellison during a live webcast to unveil the new servers.

Oracle Event Processing (OEP) for Oracle Java Embedded, a smaller footprint version of Oracle Event Processing tailored for deployment on gateways, has been introduced by Oracle. According to Oracle, OEP for Oracle Java Embedded is a solution for building embedded device applications to filter, correlate and process events in real-time so that downstream applications, services and event-driven architectures are driven by true, real-time intelligence.

Data visualization and analysis vendor Tableau Software has released version 8.0 of its analytics and visualization platform, with more than 90 news features to help organizations answer deeper questions about their data and integrate it across their organization. Web and mobile authoring enables drag and drop analytics in browsers and tablets, new data connections allow customers to interactively analyze large amounts of cloud data, and additional visualization types foster new ways to communicate with data. In addition, new APIs allow authors to integrate custom data, visualizations and dashboards into their applications and portals faster.

Veeam Software, a provider of backup, replication and virtualization management solutions for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V, has announced Veeam Explorer for Microsoft SharePoint, a new capability planned to be available in an upcoming free public beta. Supporting e-discovery, Veeam Explorer for Microsoft SharePoint enables users to pinpoint the information required to quickly locate and restore individual SharePoint items.

Emulex Corporation, a provider of converged networking solutions, has completed the acquisition of Endace Limited, a provider of converged networking solutions. Emulex acquired control of Endace, and beneficial ownership of 89% of the shares of Endace, on February 26, 2013. It has now completed the acquisition of beneficial ownership of 99.9% of the shares of Endace, and the process for the compulsory acquisition of the remaining Endace shares by Emulex pursuant to the New Zealand Takeovers Code has commenced.

BluePhoenix, a legacy application lifecycle vendor, announced the release of a proprietary code base that enables mainframe processes to be run from off-mainframe infrastructure. The vendor's Cloud Transaction Engine (CTE) is a module of the company's soon-to-be-released ATLAS Platform. The vendor also now offers a "Batch In The Cloud" service as the first formal offering leveraging CTE capabilities.

Revelation Software plans to include support for OpenID authentication as part of OpenInsight for Web (O4W), a web development toolkit that makes it possible for OpenInsight developers with limited or no HTML, XML or JavaScript experience to develop feature-rich web pages. OpenID allows people to use an existing account to sign in to multiple websites without the need to create new passwords. The new capability will be included in O4W as part of the OpenInsight 10.0 release, which is currently under development, Robert Catalano, director of sales at Revelation, tells DBTA.

The offering maximizes corporate investment through a unified approach to simultaneously work with data in-memory and directly query a variety of data systems and engines. Spotfire 5.5 also integrates with Teradata Aster, TIBCO DataSynapse GridServer, and TIBCO BusinessEvents, providing users with the ability to use predictive analytics for real-time events and big data insights.

Platfora, a native in-memory business intelligence platform for Hadoop, is now generally available. This platform puts business users directly in touch with big data and removes the need for data warehouse and ETL software. This provides customers with meaningful insights from their data in hours instead of weeks or months, the company says. Additionally, Platfora enters the market with support from the greater Hadoop community.

The event will be held April 7 to 11 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. As part of the conference, the IOUG will host the COLLABORATE 13-IOUG Forum with nearly 1,000 sessions providing user-driven content. The theme of this year's COLLABORATE 13-IOUG Forum is "Elevate - take control of your career and elevate your Oracle ecosystem knowledge and expertise," says IOUG president John Matelski.

Concurrent, Inc. announced that it has raised $4 million in Series A funding. This follows a $900,000 seed investment in August 2011. The company says that the new investment, led by True Ventures and Rembrandt Venture Partners, will be used to fuel product development, grow the core team and further deliver on the company's vision to simplify big data application development on Apache Hadoop. Concurrent also announced that Gary Nakamura has been named as its CEO.

Organizations are just now beginning to develop and integrate mobile applications with back-end data sources. However, many of the issues associated with this integration outside of traditional application management such as security and lifecycle management are not yet well known. These are the findings of a new survey of 537 data center managers, conducted among the members of the SHARE users group and GUIDE SHARE EUROPE, as well as subscribers to IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe edition. The survey was fielded during November and December of 2012. The research was sponsored by IBM and conducted by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, Inc.

IBM announced that all cloud services and software will be based on an open cloud architecture. As the first step, IBM unveiled a new private cloud offering based on the open sourced OpenStack software that it says speeds and simplifies managing an enterprise-grade cloud. The offering provides businesses with a core set of open source-based technologies to build enterprise-class cloud services that can be ported across hybrid cloud environments. The IBM announcement "goes a long way" to position OpenStack against other more proprietary solutions, Jim Curry, senior vice president and general manager of Rackspace's Private Cloud business, tells DBTA.

At the recent Strata conference, CitusDB showcased the latest release of its scalable analytics database. According to the vendor, CitusDB 2.0 brings together the performance of PostgreSQL and the scalability of Apache Hadoop, and enables real-time queries on data that's already in Hadoop. This new functionality is possible with CitusDB's distributed query planner, and PostgreSQL's foreign data wrappers.
