At Strata + Hadoop World in New York City, Cloudera announced a public beta of a new storage to enable faster analytics in Hadoop. Kudu, a new columnar store for Hadoop, enables the combination of fast analytics on fast data. Complementing the existing Hadoop storage options, HDFS and Apache HBase, Kudu is a native Hadoop storage engine that supports both low-latency random access and high-throughput analytics, dramatically simplifying Hadoop architectures for increasingly common real-time use cases.

Cloudera has launched a public beta release of RecordService, a new high-performance security layer for Apache Hadoop that centrally enforces role-based access control policies across the platform. Complementing Apache Sentry (incubating), which provides unified policy definition, RecordService delivers complete row- and column-based security, and dynamic data masking, for every Hadoop access engine. The announcement was made at Strata + Hadoop World in New York City.

Oracle has announced Oracle SOA Cloud Service and Oracle API Manager Cloud Service, new additions to the Oracle Cloud Platform for Integration. The two cloud services join Oracle's other iPaaS services, including Oracle Integration Cloud, which was announced in June. The two new releases are part of Oracle's ongoing process of augmenting and covering integration use cases to address the variety of different user requirements, according to Amit Zavery, senior vice president of Oracle Cloud Platform. "These are two different offerings for two different use cases."

IBM introduced a new cloud security technology that helps safeguard the increasing use of "bring-your-own" cloud-based apps at work. Cloud Security Enforcer combines cloud identity management (Identity-as-a-Service) with the ability for companies to discover outside apps being accessed by employees, including those they are using on their mobile devices. These combined capabilities enable companies to equip their workforce with a secure way to access and use the apps that they want.

Continuity Software, a provider of IT operations analytics for infrastructure outage prevention, unveiled a new release of its AvailabilityGuard software, intended to provide enterprise IT teams with advanced predictive analytics, risk detection, and outage prevention capabilities across their software-defined data centers. "The transition towards the software-defined data center delivers higher levels of agility and control to IT organizations, but at the same time presents new challenges," said Doron Pinhas, CTO of Continuity Software.

Datos IO has announced a recovery platform for next-generation scale-out databases. The company, headquartered in San Jose, Calif., was founded by former Data Domain (EMC), Veritas and IBM Research veteran Tarun Thakur, CEO, and Prasenjit Sarkar, CTO, who spent more than 15 years at IBM Research. The company is now offering its Early Access Program (EAP), and the product will is planned to be generally available in 2016.

Reframing what IT might look like in the future, and acknowledging that it could be radically different than it is today, is a challenging task but not an impossible one. In fact, I would suggest that such reframing is necessary if IT is to remain relevant.

IBM is acquiring StrongLoop, Inc., a software provider, to help developers connect enterprise applications to mobile, Internet of Things (IoT) and web applications in the cloud. StrongLoop is a provider of application development software - known as enterprise Node.js - that enables software developers to build applications using APIs (application programming interfaces). Financial terms and conditions were not released.

VMware recently made a slew of announcements spanning cloud deployments, data center, and devices. The company introduced what it calls the first fully automated software suite for delivering the software-defined data center as an integrated system. Serving as a foundation of VMware's Unified Hybrid Cloud platform, the solution, called VMware EVO SDDC, will extend the virtualization principals of abstraction, pooling and automation across all data center resources and services.

BMC, a provider of large systems software solutions, announced new versions of its mainframe cost optimization suite that promise greater transparency and lower costs. BMC's Mainframe MLC Cost Management is a cost management and reduction suite for companies leveraging IBM z Systems mainframes. The solutions provide insight, transparent reporting, resource control, and subsystem optimization that can lower mainframe MLC costs by as much as 20 percent or more, the vendor claimed.

Oracle has expanded its flash storage portfolio with the announcement of an all-flash model of its Oracle FS1 Flash Storage System. Designed to handle concurrent mixed workloads, such as OLTP and high-speed data backup, in enterprise SAN environments as well as in private or public clouds, the system delivers up to 64 all-flash domains, and enables secure data isolation in multitenant cloud environments.
