CA Technologies says it is working to help IT organizations and employees meet workforce needs and address sustainability challenges with core programming skills training offered through its Mainframe Academy and Mainframe Associate Software Engineering Program (MASEP). The training is necessary to support customers who rely on the mainframe as a critical component of their data centers, according to CA. The goal of the Mainframe Academy and MASEP is to certify graduates in the mastery of mainframe skills across hardware, applications and environments.

Red Hat, a provider of open-source-based platforms, announced the availability of the beta version of the seventh update for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5. This beta of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (version 5.7) contains a number of enhancements for enterprise management and virtualization performance. Also included are updates to the drivers and kernel to support Intel, AMD, POWER and IBM mainframe hardware updates.

Oracle has announced the availability of Oracle SQL Developer 3.0. The new release focuses on ease of migration, improving development and database administrator (DBA) tasks, and introduces support for Oracle Data Mining and Oracle Spatial. A free graphical tool for database development, Oracle SQL Developer Release 3.0 is downloadable from the Oracle Technology Network (OTN).

Oracle has unveiled Oracle Retail Merchandising Analytics to offer retailers a new prebuilt business intelligence application that incorporates performance metrics across the entire enterprise and promotes a faster response to market opportunities. "This is a merchandising-specific business intelligence application," David Dorf, senior director of technology strategy for Oracle Retail, tells 5 Minute Briefing. The solution provides insight to critical performance indicators such as item sales, store performance, effectiveness of promotions and markdowns, inventory turn, sales and profit trends, as well as current and potential out-of-stocks.

SAP AG and Sybase, Inc., an SAP company, have announced plans to make the enterprise resource planning (ERP) application SAP ERP the first SAP Business Suite application running on Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE). The announcement was made at SAPPHIRE NOW in Orlando where pilot customers also showcased how they are using SAP ERP on Sybase ASE. In combining SAP applications with Sybase technology, along with "harmonized" customer services and support, the companies say they will be able to offer organizations a new database option for running SAP applications and accessing critical information, providing efficiency gains and cost reductions.

Sybase has unveiled Sybase Event Streaming Processor (ESP), a major new version of the Sybase Aleri CEP platform. Sybase ESP, version 5 of the Sybase Aleri Event Stream Processor, provides new capabilities in enterprise scalability and user productivity. River Parishes Community College (RPCC) is an open-admission, 2-year, public institution. It is located in the small Ascension Parish town of Sorrento in what is known as the River Parishes region of the state because of the parishes' proximity to the Mississippi River. RPCC recently implemented a new self-service student portal based on Revelation Software's Web 2.0 toolkit, OpenInsight for Web (O4W). The new portal allows students to accomplish a range of tasks on their own, such as scheduling classes, without requiring assistance from school administrators.

Entrinsik has announced that J.W. Terrill, which provides property and casualty, and employee benefit products and services, has selected Entrinik's Informer software for its automated scheduling and distribution capabilities, Live Excel integration capabilities and multiple output operations. The agency is using Vertafore's Sagitta agency management system and had been manually creating and distributing recurring reports, and using Excel to customize the reports and create-user specific versions. They would then distribute the reports via email attachments.

Data quality, MDM, and data governance software vendor Ataccama Corporation announced that it has entered into a cooperative partnership with Teradata Corporation, a leader in data warehousing and enterprise analytics. The partnership is aimed at enabling joint customers to improve data quality within their data warehouses. Ataccama is a global software company with headquarters in Prague, and offices in Toronto, Stamford, London, and Munich, and the new partnership with Teradata represents a worldwide geographical relationship, according to Michal Klaus, CEO, Ataccama Corp.

HiT Software, a provider of data integration and change data capture products for heterogeneous database environments, has announced DBMoto version 7.1, the newest version of its change data capture product. This release adds IBM Informix log reading, open APIs to embed DBMoto in applications and systems, and a replication activity viewer to monitor replication jobs. "A number of customers have asked us to develop log reading for Informix," Carolyn Hughes, director of marketing, tells 5 Minute Briefing. "A lot of the Informix installed base deals with high-transaction businesses, such as retail and telco, and so being able to read the transaction logs as opposed to relying on triggers will enable a huge time savings."

RainStor, an infrastructure software company specializing in online data retention (OLDR), today announced that RainStor 4.5 can be deployed using Cloudera's Distribution including Apache Hadoop. "We are focused on storing and retaining data in its original form but at a much lower priced footprint than you would do with a normal relational database or a data warehouse or, in this particular case, even if you ran it on low-cost commodity hardware in Hadoop," Ramon Chen, RainStor's vice president of product management, tells 5 Minute Briefing.

Symantec Corp. has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Clearwell Systems, Inc., a privately held vendor in the e-discovery market for a purchase price of approximately $390 million, net of Clearwell's existing cash balance of approximately $20 million. "As information continues to grow at unprecedented rates, the biggest challenge for customers is to protect, manage and backup this information as well as have the ability to categorize and discover it efficiently," said Deepak Mohan, senior vice president, Information Management Group, Symantec. The acquisition is expected to close in the September quarter.

After 5 years in Seattle, PASS (the Professional Association for SQL Server) will hold its annual SQL Server and BI conference in Charlotte, NC, in 2013, bringing the event closer to database professionals in the eastern U.S. who may not have been able to make the cross-country trip in the past, as well as making it more convenient for international travelers. PASS Summit 2007 in Denver was the last Summit held outside Seattle.

SnapLogic, a provider of application integration software, has introduced a solution aimed at enabling easy connection and reliable large data integration between business applications, cloud services, social media and Hadoop. DataKinetics, a provider of mainframe transaction and performance solutions, announced a solution designed to increase mainframe data capacity and throughput while decreasing data access request time for DB2. The Java to DB2 Optimizer, initially developed by DataKinetics to solve Java to DB2 access issues in the mainframe of a large U.S. bank, helps minimize DB2 processing loads, first by reducing the number of I/Os to DB2 for read-only data, and replacing dynamic SQL queries with stored procedures.

Alpine Data Labs, developer of Alpine Miner, a solution for big data predictive analytics, has received $7.5 million in Series A funding. In addition, after 15 months of product development, the company also announced its 10th production customer and its formal launch in the U.S. market. According to Anderson Wong, Alpine Labs CEO and co-founder, organizations cannot extract all the possible value from their data because it is growing faster than they can analyze it, they don't have enough resources with analytics expertise, and the tools they're using are too complex to get to the answers they need quickly.

Oracle has submitted a proposal to the Eclipse Foundation to create a Hudson project in Eclipse and contribute the Hudson core code to that project. Hudson is a industry-leading open source "continuous integration" (CI) server that increases productivity by coordinating and monitoring executions of repeated jobs, making it easier for developers to integrate changes to the project and for users to obtain a fresh build.

Unisys CEO Ed Coleman is planning to attend the upcoming UNITE 2011 Technology Conference and Exhibition. Coleman is scheduled to give a short address at the opening general session prior to the keynote, which will be presented by Ann Thureen, Unisys vice president of engineering and supply chain technology and infrastructure services, and Wayne Carpenter, Unisys vice president of sales, application modernization, and North American technology on Monday, May 23. And, after that session, Coleman will be available in the foyers and on the exhibit floor for attendees to meet with and have informal ad hoc discussions. This year's conference will take place May 22-25 at the Hyatt Regency Orange County in Garden Grove, California.

The PostgreSQL project has released the first beta of version 9.1. This beta release contains all of the features which will be in the final release, which is expected to be released 2 to 4 months from now, sometime between July and September. According to the PostgreSQL project team, PostgreSQL 9.1 contains a "huge volume" of new features, possibly more than any single release of PostgreSQL before. The overarching theme of the new release is innovation - "not just new to us but new to anybody," Josh Berkus, PostgreSQL core team member, tells 5 Minute Briefing.
