Data-driven organizations rely on analytic databases—which are often in the cloud—to load, store, and analyze volumes of data at high speed to derive timely, actionable insights. However, data volumes within modern organizations' information ecosystems are rapidly expanding—placing significant performance demands on legacy architectures. To gain the full benefit of their data for competitive advantage, businesses need modern scalable architectures and high levels of performance and reliability to provide timely analytical insights.

More and more DBAs are being tasked with taking care of "non-relational" databases. In the past it was just Oracle or SQL Server that DBAs had to worry about. Now, platforms such as MongoDB and Cassandra are coming under the management of IT, requiring a new set of skills for existing teams. Jason Hall, senior systems consultant, Quest Software, explores familiar concepts DBAs are accustomed to, and how these concepts can translate to NoSQL platforms in his Data Summit 2018 session titled, "NoSQL Concepts for the Relational DBA."

Keeping data highly available is no longer a simple matter of backing up one database with an up-to-the-second copy of another. Today's enterprise data environments are complex, with many database platforms and modes of computing. A hybrid data infrastructure calls for new approaches to data replication. This is one of the takeaways of a recent survey of 285 IT managers and professionals, conducted by Unisphere Research among members of the Independent Oracle Users Group.

As a DBA, all of my best ideas came out of IOUG. I have spent a lot of time after sessions and during gatherings at COLLABORATE  talking with my peers about things I was working on or stumped on at work. I have often been shocked at how many times someone had an answer so quickly. But I have  figured out that they weren't DBA gods, but rather someone similar to me. They have just had the same issue I had but sooner and had worked on it for hours. I was just getting the benefit of all their time.

DBAs can recover a database, tune SQL, and may even know how to write some PL/SQL when push comes to shove. And, yes, those are all great skills to have. But in 2018, DBAs need more, writes Matt Malcheski in a new IOUG SELECT article. Malcheski goes over the "hot topics," including blockchain, AI, and Internet of Things, and notes that DBAs of the future will need to understand not only the technical aspects of these and the other technologies but also must be able understand and add value to the functional data requirements necessary for all-encompassing solutions. "This is characterized in a data point from Gartner: By 2021, 40% of IT staff will be 'versatilists' holding multiple roles, most of which will be business rather than technology related."
