HP and SAP AG are making progress on a joint initiative, code-named "Project Kraken," to improve business processes and mitigate risks for customers. Unveiled last January, Project Kraken is a co-innovation effort between HP and SAP, built from years of HP server technology innovations and optimized with the in-memory SAP HANA database for SAP Business Suite. OpenText, a provider of enterprise information management (EIM) software, announced the expansion of the OpenText ECM Suite for SAP Solutions in support of SAP's latest technologies, including the SAP HANA platform, and cloud and mobility solutions. This support builds on a partnership that spans more than two decades and is growing every year, says Patrick Barnert, senior vice president, Partners and Alliances, OpenText. OpenText, he adds, is the first SAP ISV partner to have its products fully tested and confirmed by SAP to be integrated with SAP Business Suite powered by SAP HANA.

IBM has added new IBM SmartCloud capabilities, including DB2 with BLU Acceleration that can result in as much as 25 times faster reporting and analytics, and SmartCloud availability for SAP's in-memory database SAP HANA. The new BLU Acceleration technology from IBM Research and Development labs adds dynamic in-memory analytics to DB2 database software on IBM SmartCloud, making it simpler, faster and more economical to analyze massive amounts of data. The new SAP HANA support includes a physical HANA appliance on IBM SmartCloud for SAP Applications, hosted on SmartCloud Enterprise+. A virtual HANA appliance is available on IBM SmartCloud Enterprise (SCE) for early stage development and test.

Data backup solutions provider STORServer has begun shipping a new version of its virtual machine backup software, which now includes IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Virtual Environments (TSM for VE). STORServer VMB v5.0 provides access to the many of the features of TSM for VE, including block-level full and incremental backups based on VMware changed block tracking. Virtual machine and individual file recovery from both full and incremental backups, and block-level incremental backups of virtual machines running on non-Windows operating systems.

Software AG has launched a cloud-based Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) suite, intended to support the building of cloud-based applications. The Software AG Live suite, now available, includes integration and business process management capabilities. In addition, Software AG says it will be releasing a new version of Software AG's webMethods Integration Server that supports elastic scaling across hybrid deployments - public cloud, private cloud and on-premise. The new release, branded as Dynamic Cloud Scaling, will be available in the second half of 2013.

HP announced software enhancements and new unified communication support for thin clients such as mobile devices. HP's network performance management software for thin clients, and extended support for Citrix, aim to solve connectivity, security and compatibility issues faced by mobile users. Citrix virtualization and networking technologies, coupled with HP Velocity, are now configured to enable applications such as video streaming, file transfer and VoIP to operate more reliably, even over challenging networks.

Dell Software's latest release of SharePlex, a data replication solution, has added support for near real-time data integration to drive improved data warehousing, business intelligence and analytics. SharePlex, which has a heritage as an Oracle-to-Oracle data replication solution, now enables customers to replicate Oracle data using CDC to other databases, including structured databases such as SQL Server, DB2, Sybase, Netezza, and Teradata, as well as emerging unstructured databases such as Hadoop and Greenplum. SharePlex 8.0 also adds new support for Oracle Transparent Data Encryption and Hybrid Columnar Compression.

Redesigned to improve implementation, Oracle Business Intelligence (BI) Applications Release 11.1.1.7.1 incorporates enhancements across the BI Applications product line and also introduces two new in-memory analytic applications. Cloudant, a provider of a globally distributed database-as-a-service (DBaaS), has announced $12 million in series B funding from Devonshire Investors, the private equity firm affiliated with Fidelity Investments; RackspaceHosting, the open cloud leader; and Toba Capital. The company also announced that current investors — Avalon Ventures, In-Q-Tel, Samsung Venture Investment Corporation — purchased additional shares. The funding will be used to support Cloudant's global expansion and grow the company's support, service, and go-to-market strategies.

PerspecSys Inc., a provider of cloud data protection solutions for the enterprise, announced it has raised $12 million in funding co-led by new investors Paladin Capital Group and Ascent Venture Partners, and joined by return backer Intel Capital and other existing institutional investors. The new round of financing, combined with Series A funding, brings the total investment in PerspecSys to over $20 million. With offices in the U.S., U.K. and Canada, PerspecSys aims to remove what it says are primary barriers to cloud adoption at the enterprise level - security and control.

A new release of Oracle Secure Global Desktop, part of Oracle's Desktop Virtualization portfolio, extends secure access to cloud-hosted and on-premise enterprise applications and desktops from Apple iPad and iPad mini tablets, without the need for a VPN client. Now, through support of the HTML5 standard, Oracle Secure Global Desktop 5.0 allows tablet users to access enterprise applications with just a web browser, so they can use their own devices for work. The new release provides tablet users, in addition to PC, MAC and desktop users, certified access to Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud and web-based applications such as Oracle E-Business Suite, Oracle Siebel CRM, Oracle Primavera, and many others.
