The new Oracle Big Data Appliance X3-2 Starter Rack is intended to help customers jump start their first big data projects and the new Oracle Big Data Appliance X3-2 In-Rack Expansion is aimed at helping them cost-effectively scale the system as their data grows. In addition, the Oracle Big Data Appliance X3-2 (Full Rack configuration) is now available through Oracle Infrastructure as a Service.

Oracle showcased the Oracle Database Appliance X3-2 in a webcast last week. The new version provides up to twice the performance and supports over four times the storage of the original Oracle Database Appliance, and allows customers to expand their data volumes instantly by connecting a Storage Expansion Shelf with no administration required. The Oracle Database Appliance X3-2 also supports virtualization, said Oracle president Mark Hurd during the webcast. "This means even more value for mid-size companies, departments and branches, and also means great things for our partners."

Revelation Software plans to include support for OpenID authentication as part of OpenInsight for Web (O4W), a web development toolkit that makes it possible for OpenInsight developers with limited or no HTML, XML or JavaScript experience to develop feature-rich web pages. OpenID allows people to use an existing account to sign in to multiple websites without the need to create new passwords. The new capability will be included in O4W as part of the OpenInsight 10.0 release, which is currently under development, Robert Catalano, director of sales at Revelation, tells DBTA.

Organizations are just now beginning to develop and integrate mobile applications with back-end data sources. However, many of the issues associated with this integration outside of traditional application management such as security and lifecycle management are not yet well known. These are the findings of a new survey of 537 data center managers, conducted among the members of the SHARE users group and GUIDE SHARE EUROPE, as well as subscribers to IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe edition.
