ArangoDB, an open source native multi-model database, is releasing ArangoDB 3.5, providing new features that allow its growing customer base to more easily query, secure, and search their data sets across multiple data models. ArangoDB 3.5 brings updates to both the Community Edition, which is fully open source under the Apache 2.0 license, as well as the Enterprise Edition, ArangoDB's commercial offering that includes features to help more easily secure and scale ArangoDB across an organization.

IBM plans to provide "quantum-safe" cryptography services on the IBM public cloud in 2020. Additionally, IBM cryptographers have prototyped what the company calls the "world's first quantum computing-safe enterprise-class tape." At the current rate of progress in quantum computing, IBM says, it is expected that data protected by the asymmetric encryption methods used today may become insecure within the next 10-30 years. Acknowledging that this is a significant time away, IBM however cautions that data can be harvested today, stored, and decrypted in the future with a powerful enough quantum computer.

IBM and the OpenPOWER Foundation have also announced that OpenPOWER will move under the Linux Foundation, and will operate consistently with the Linux Foundation's open governance principles.

Oracle has announced general availability of four new cloud regions across four key geographies. Following launches completed this year in Toronto, Tokyo, and Seoul, Oracle has just launched a region in Mumbai, India, and will shortly be going live in Sao Paulo, Brazil; Sydney, Australia; and Zurich, Switzerland.

In previous articles, we looked at creating and managing Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) database and compute instances through the web UI. The UI is ideal for a new user and occasional management of a cloud environment. When a cloud administrator is managing and automating dozens or hundreds of instances, manually clicking through the UI becomes untenable. Oracle supports and maintains a number of developer tools to solve this problem.

Toshiba Memory America, the U.S.-based subsidiary of Toshiba Memory Corp., has announced the launch of a new Storage Class Memory (SCM) solution, XL-FLASH. Based on the company's BiCS FLASH 3D flash memory technology with 1-bit-per-cell SLC, Toshiba says the XL-FLASH offers low latency and high performance for data center and enterprise storage. Sample shipments will start in September, with mass production expected to begin in 2020.

Oracle has announced the general availability in all commercial regions of Oracle Functions, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure's functions-as-a-service (FaaS) platform. The announcement was made in an August 1 blog post by Shaun Smith, who leads serverless product management at Oracle and is a member of the open source Fn Project functions platform team. According to Smith, Oracle Functions is built on the Apache 2.0 licensed Fn Project, which can be used anywhere, from a developer laptop to a cloud compute platform, and customers have the option to operate their own functions service in-house or use the cloud-scale Oracle Functions platform to avoid the costs associated with managing infrastructure.

The round is led by Altimeter Capital, Tiger Global, and existing investor GV, with participation from existing investors Benchmark, Index Ventures, Redpoint Ventures, FirstMark Capital, and Work-Bench, and brings Cockroach Labs' total funding to $108.5 million.
