IBM announced that the latest version of Lotus Symphony, its free-of-charge productivity software suite, now provides support for Microsoft Office 2007, enabling organizations to now import Microsoft Office 2007 files into Symphony. According to IBM, the new support will enable Microsoft Office customers to switch to Symphony while retaining access to, and use of, the contents of their Office files.

Oracle Corporation announced availability of Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g, the next generation of the vendors' leading middleware product suite designed for service oriented architecture-based environments. Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g is an application infrastructure that now includes the WebLogic application server, originally offered by BEA Systems before the company was acquired by Oracle in 2008. The suite also includes a number of integrated and hot-pluggable components, including new capabilities in Oracle SOA Suite, Oracle WebLogic Suite, Oracle WebCenter Suite and Oracle Identity Management.

The PostgreSQL Global Development Group has released version 8.4 of the PostgreSQL open source database. The new release contains 293 new or improved features, including many enhancements to make administering, querying, and programming of PostgreSQL databases easier. The most numerous changes in PostgreSQL 8.4 are new or improved administration and monitoring tools and commands.

IBM has announced a new version of Tivoli Identity Manager security software that tackles the fragmented state of the identity and access governance market with a single solution that helps organizations administer, secure, monitor and certify user identities and their access to applications, information and systems. Critical business information no longer resides solely in the data center. Organizations must be able to control who has access to what information across entire IT and data center environments including systems, devices, data and applications, while also reporting compliance with industry and government regulations.

IBM recently announced expanded feed coverage and additional features for the WebSphere Front Office for Financial Markets version 3 platform designed to help financial firms efficiently handle enormous amounts of data from multiple, disparate sources and make electronic trading decisions based on this information more quickly than ever before. WebSphere Front Office for Financial Markets offers data vendor independence and can accept feeds from virtually any provider. Supported feeds include major U.S. and international data sources, and primarily come from the major financial and securities exchanges around the world. The system can also simultaneously offer varying levels of quality of service depending on the type of application that requires the data (e.g., front office trading systems would require a higher level of service in terms of reduced data feed latency versus back office risk management systems that can tolerate a bit more latency).

Voltaire Ltd., a provider of scale-out data center fabrics, announced the general availability of the Grid Director 4700, a 40 Gb/s InfiniBand director switch, which offers low latency rates. Combined with Voltaire's Unified Fabric Manager (UFM) software, released in conjunction with Grid Director, the solution provides faster performance and scalability for large, high-performance scale-out data centers, the vendor says.

DynamicOps announced a new line of automated virtualization management software that incorporates automated resource reclamation, designed to identify and reclaim inactive and abandoned virtual machines to control virtual machine sprawl. DynamicOps Virtual Resource Manager (VRM) automates the manual process required to reclaim and recycle unneeded virtual machines. The new VRM 3.2 helps companies use their virtualization infrastructure much more efficiently, reducing the need for IT staff to manually reclaim unused virtual machines and making the best use of IT assets. This improved efficiency results in significant cost savings.
