In a move designed to provide SQL capabilities on top of FoundationDB, the Vienna, Virginia-based company has announced the acquisition of Akiban Technologies. FoundationDB is a scalable and fault tolerant NoSQL database with high performance cross-node fully ACID transactions. Akiban provides a SQL database with an object-structured design.

CA Technologies has expanded CA Chorus, its integrated mainframe management platform, with new capabilities for network and system management. The company also announced additional mainframe management solutions to help improve IT performance and productivity, a combination of solutions aimed at helping IT staff provide uninterrupted business services. "The growth of mobile and cloud use in the enterprise has created a dynamic data center that contracts and expands at the will of the business users - not IT," Michael Madden, general manager for Mainframe at CA Technologies, tells 5 Minute Briefing.

Technology performance company Compuware Corporation has made enhancements to Abend-AID, its mainframe application failure resolution solution. The latest improvements make Abend-AID easier to use. Abend-AID also includes analytics to help more rapidly resolve application failures. The new release is targeted at IT staff members unfamiliar with mainframe applications or entry-level developers who are more familiar with distributed, Java applications, Stuart Feravich, director of mainframe product management at Compuware, tells 5 Minute Briefing. Along with staff inexperience with mainframes, Feravich also is seeing less tolerance for any downtime, since many of these applications are now "very much part of the customer facing application or infrastructure in companies."

IBM's second-quarter 2013 results were lower across the board, with the exception of its mainframe and enterprise software units. The computer giant reports net income of $3.2 billion for the most recent quarter, compared with $3.9 billion for the same quarter last year - a decrease of 17%. Total revenues for the second quarter of 2013 totaled $24.9 billion, down 3% from the second quarter of 2012. IBM took a $1-billion charge for what it called "workforce rebalancing" - cutbacks and layoffs across its global workforce.

WSO2, an enterprise middleware provider, says it has launched a platform built to enable the development of an enterprise app store for delivery of application programming interfaces (APIs). The new product, WSO2 App Factory, is designed to provide cloud delivery through a shared, self-service, multi-tenant and elastic enterprise DevOps platform. The goal is for teams to be able to collaboratively create, develop and deploy enterprise applications into cloud environments, without the necessity of server provisioning. The platform also includes lifecycle management and governance to ensure compliance with IT, corporate and government policies

Riverbed Technology, an application performance vendor, announced a new release of its Riverbed Granite product family - including software and appliances - engineered to support enterprise-class server and data consolidation. New features are intended to enable IT managers to consolidate larger branch offices and data-intensive applications that previously were difficult or impossible to consolidate, the vendor says. Granite is intended to enable the removal of servers and data from branch offices so they can be positioned in a centralized data center.

The latest version of Oracle's Exalytics In-Memory Machine, version X3-4, features significant software enhancements and hardware updates to improve the capabilities of the high-speed engineered system for business analytics. SAP AG and Esri, a geographic information system (GIS) and location analytics provider, are joining forces to more deeply integrate GIS solutions with platforms and enterprise applications from SAP in order to improve business efficiency and decision-making. The ability to combine the added dimension of location information with enterprise data, in real time is aimed at giving businesses greater immediacy in their decision-making capabilities. "We are partnering with the leading GIS vendor in the marketplace, Esri, to provide much deeper integration. Terracotta, provider of in-memory technologies for enterprise big data, unveiled new versions of BigMemory 4, its flagship product for managing big, fast data, and Web Sessions 4, its solution for distributed in-memory session management. Together, the company says the new offerings enable faster, more reliable access to session data in large-scale, high-traffic web applications. 28msec, Inc. announced the launch of the company and its first product, 28.io, which it calls an Information Processing Platform (IPP). Reducing the time to develop and run complex queries on SQL and NoSQL databases by an order of magnitude over existing solutions, the company says 28.io enables businesses to retrieve and process data from multiple formats (such as JSON, XML, HTML, relational data, CSV, and text), located in various data stores, including both SQL and NoSQL sources using one single language and platform.

IBM says that it has completed the acquisition of SoftLayer Technologies Inc., a privately held cloud computing infrastructure company based in Dallas, Texas, for an undisclosed sum. The initial acquisition agreement was announced on June 4th, and is the basis of IBM's new cloud services division, which combines SoftLayer with IBM SmartCloud.

Cisco has disclosed a data center networking architecture that is intended to transform data centers in order to better address the demands of new and current applications in the cloud era. The architecture, which has a number of components, is based on Cisco's recent investment in Insieme Networks, an enterprise data center development and integration firm. Key attributes of Cisco's new application-focused architecture will include Application Velocity, which is intended to reduce application deployment times via fully automated and programmatic network infrastructure. In addition, Cisco says it will be supporting a common open platform for physical, virtual and cloud infrastructure.

IBM is shipping a new version of its DB2 database software that includes a new feature called "BLU Acceleration," designed to make it simpler, more economical and faster to analyze massive amounts of data. The new IBM DB2 10.5 with BLU Acceleration aims for analytics "at the speed of thought" with a range of made-in-IBM-Labs advances to significantly speed analytic workloads for databases and data warehouses.

SanDisk Corporation, a provider of flash memory storage solutions, says its investment arm, SanDisk Ventures, is now backing Panzura, a provider of flash-based network attached storage (NAS) solutions for enterprises. Oracle expanded its partnerships with key cloud vendors. Microsoft Corp. and Oracle Corp. have formed a partnership that will enable customers to run Oracle software on Windows Server Hyper-V and in Windows Azure, Microsoft's cloud platform. Customers will be able to deploy Oracle software — including Java, Oracle Database and Oracle WebLogic Server — on Windows Server Hyper-V or in Windows Azure and receive full support from Oracle. In addition, Salesforce.com and Oracle also announced a comprehensive nine-year partnership encompassing all three tiers of cloud computing: applications, platform and infrastructure.

Splunk Inc., which provides a software platform for real-time operational intelligence, has introduced the beta version of Hunk: Splunk Analytics for Hadoop. Hunk is a new software product from Splunk that integrates exploration, analysis and visualization of data in Hadoop. Silverback Enterprise Group has acquired Noetix Corp., a provider of business intelligence (BI) and data analytics software. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Noetix is Silverback's sixth acquisition in the past 2 years. Silverback is headquartered in Austin, Texas and backed by Austin Ventures, a venture capital firm with $3.9 billion of capital raised.

SAP AG announced this week that version 16 of the company's Sybase software has achieved a Guinness World Record for loading and indexing big data. In cooperation with BMMsoft, HP and Red Hat, SAP Sybase IQ 16 achieved an audited result of 34.3 terabytes per hour, surpassing the previous record of 14 terabytes per hour achieved by the same team using an earlier version of SAP Sybase IQ. The latest version of th real-time analytics server and enterprise data warehouse (EDW) provides a new, fully parallel data loading capability and a next-generation column store, enabling the jump in big data performance.

SAP plans to acquire hybris, an e-commerce software company. SAP says the combination of its own enterprise solutions combined with e-commerce solutions from hybris will provide enterprises with the enhanced data and tools necessary to optimize margins and customer loyalty. Upon completion of the transaction, expected in the third quarter of 2013 and subject to regulatory approval and other closing conditions, SAP says hybris will operate as an independent business unit and will retain its existing management team led by Ariel Ludi, CEO, and Carsten Thoma, president and co-founder, of hybris.

Unisys UK has joined the SAP PartnerEdge program as an SAP services partner. The program provides the company with access to resources and services from SAP that will help Unisys serve public sector clients with highly sensitive project requirements. Through this new partnership, Unisys will leverage its expertise with SAP solutions in relation to its work with Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), where it supports applications that are critical for the day-to-day policing of London. Over the past 24 months alone, Unisys has delivered more than 12,000 days of SAP solution-related work to the MPS. Composite Software has released the Composite Data Virtualization Platform 6.2 SP3. This release really has four elements, Robert Eve, executive vice president of marketing, Composite, tells 5 Minute Briefing. It updates the Hortonworks, Cloudera and the Apache Distribution of Hadoop big data integrations through the HiveServer2 interface, and then fourth, provides new access to Cloudera CDH through Impala. "The key problem with big data is that there are not enough people that are skilled at the big data tools to use them effectively," Eve notes.

Rocket Software has announced the availability of System Builder Extensible Architecture (SB/XA) which allows users to rapidly build robust business solutions. By applying SB/XA Designer default styles, users indicate mandatory fields and where intuitive help is available. In addition, Outlook-style menus can be included to create an environment that feels familiar to users. Data can be reported out to Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word or XML formats, giving users access to their data in their preferred business application.
