The HP SDN App Store is intended to provide HP's partners a platform together with consulting and support services that will enable customers to uncover the business value of SDN. Brocade is beefing up its routers with capabilities to address the bandwidth, scale, and performance needed for emerging software defined networks. The Brocade MLX Series routers will include new hardware modules and software. As part of the update, Brocade is delivering software enhancements to the Brocade MLXe carrier-class routing platform, including support for OpenFlow 1.3 with significant features to help organizations deploy new application- and user-specific services in a secure manner.

Oracle CTO Larry Ellison took the stage at the Moscone Center to kick off the Oracle OpenWorld conference on Sunday evening. As he does each year, Ellison outlined major announcements for the week and explained the company's technology vision to set the tone for the conference. Confirming analysts' predictions that 2014 would be the year of the cloud for Oracle, Ellison said 2014 is an inflection point for the company. Ellison's key announcement was Oracle's upgraded platform-as-a-service capability: a fourth generation upward-compatible database.

Oracle made two new announcements around NoSQL. It is extending Oracle Enterprise Manager capabilities to MySQL databases. With this new offering, customers can manage complex deployments of Oracle technologies that include MySQL, either on-premise or in a cloud. In addition, Oracle announced a new development milestone release for MySQL 5.7 which extends performance, scalability, reliability and management capabilities. The company also announced several MySQL product releases and early access features, as well as the availability of MySQL source code on GitHub.com.

SAP has agreed to acquire Concur, a provider of travel and expense (T&E) management software, for $8.3 billion. "The acquisition of Concur is consistent with our relentless focus on the business network," said Bill McDermott, CEO of SAP, in a statement released by the company. "We are making a bold move to innovate the future of business within and between companies. With Ariba, Fieldglass and Concur, SAP is the undisputed business network company."

Just after Oracle announced that Larry Ellison would take on the role of executive chairman and CTO, and be succeeded as CEO by Safra Catz and Mark Hurd, the three Oracle executives hosted the company's fiscal 2015 Q1 earnings call. Ellison noted that at Oracle OpenWorld, which starts September 27, 2014, the company will be rolling out its new database cloud service with its new multitenant DBaaS offerings. "Our customers and ISVs can move any of their existing applications and databases to the Oracle Cloud with the push of a button," said Ellison.

Ellison, they say, will remain a force to be reckoned with at Oracle.

Oracle has signed an agreement to acquire Front Porch Digital, a Lafayette, Colorado-based provider of content storage management solutions that help companies migrate, manage and monetize large-scale media assets. According to John Fowler, executive vice president of Oracle Systems, Front Porch Digital's capabilities complement Oracle's existing engineered storage solutions.

A new solution from BMC Software is designed to help reduce the need for multiple mainframe subsystems. The new software, BMC Subsystem Optimizer for zEnterprise, removes the traditional requirement that DB2, IMS and CICS subsystems must reside on the same logical partition (LPAR) to communicate and process workloads, the vendor said. Overcoming this requirement translates to "significant" mainframe monthly license costs (MLC) savings of up to 20% or more, according to BMC.

Ericcson and SAP have announced plans for Ericsson to offer SAP's cloud-based enterprise mobility management portfolio Mobile Secure combined with an IT managed service offering, thereby expanding Ericsson's portfolio of services available for its more than 400 mobile network operators. Worldwide, Ericsson manages networks that serve 600 million subscribers and additionally provides managed services for networks that serve 1 billion subscribers. The companies cited estimates that the enterprise mobility management market will reach $2.1 billion by 2016.

DataStax, a data management company that provides an enterprise distribution of Apache Cassandra, has scored $106 million in Series E financing. With this new round of funding, DataStax says it plans to continue to drive enterprise adoption and innovation in Apache Cassandra, and will further invest in the developer community, which now spans over 80 countries.
